Computer Question...

My computer is not letting me defrag. I am getting an error message saying "Scan Aborted: File Error: Thumbs.db"

I've looked up Thumbs.db on Microsoft's website and found nothing pertaining to the defrag error I am getting. I have read about what Thumbs.db is and deleted Tumbs.db but it hasnt worked.

Does anyone here know what that is? Can anyone steer me in the right direction? I have tried hard to resolve this problem on my own, and any help would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

2. Have you tried stopping al processes?
Control/alt/delete and then stop all running processed except for explorer.exe . See if that works.

4. Reboot into Safe Mode.
That's the easiest way to disable a bunch of unnecessary services, and it makes it easier for the defrag program to run.

5. Is your Drive almost full?
Defrag needs space to work.

6. Tried it..
I restarted in safe mode, and it showed an error message when I tried to use diskkeeper saying that it couldn't find the program.

My drive is 40 megs, and Im using about 18-20 right now.

7. Thumbs.DB
I did some web research and found out that thumbs.db is an XP file. Here's a suggestion I encountered:

Removing Thumbs.db Files (Windows XP)

When viewing a folder with the Thumbnail view, WindowsXP creates a thumbs.db file.
This is a cache of the current pictures in that directory.
If you want to turn this feature off and save a little disk space

Start the Windows Explorer

Go to Tools / Folder Options / View

In the first section under Files and Folders, check Do not cache thumbnails

Now you can search for the thumbs.db file on your computer and remove them. No more should be created.

12. I have searched and deleted them all...many times
I go to "search"" and I type in Thumbs.db

I have searched all files, hidden and system files. I have gone to the micrsoft site and gone step by step through the instructions of how to not cache tumbnails.

It didnt work, and Im still getting the error message.

I've also typed in the error message at Microsoft's site, and gotten no matches for that error message.

13. After you searched for the thumbs.db files,
did you then go to those directories and delete them?

Did you try deleting all of them, and then rebooting?

18. You need to do a scandisk first.
Defrag always does a scandisk before it defrags. If scandisk fails, it won't defrag - but it won't correct the scandisk condition either. Go to Scandisk (right click the drive, Properties/Tools/Error-Checking) and run scandisk.
