34. Ding! We have a winner!
I hope she goes into reclusion and doesn't come out.
OTOH, Madonna, who is successful in balancing her career and motherhood, needs to school her..

Please. I'm serious. Slurs against them are beneath the dignity of the Democratic ideal. Thanks.

8. Oh god! She's going to be Rick Santorum's role model
I can see Rickass now "Look at J-Lo, she recognized that being a mother is a fulltime job and gave up her career to stay at home and raise the kids"

I think I just barfed a lil in my mouth!

9. Well im not really a fan of her work but I give her props for this.
You canot be a good mother and be a star in Hollywood....The amount of time you have to spend away from your kids makes it impossible.

14. For fucks sake...
She obviously wants to be more involved in her childrens lives otherwise she wouldnt be thinking about quitting her work...I said mother because in this specific case we happen to be talking about a woman. I didnt put anything "on women" so save it.

21. well , did it occur to you that the dad has a very demanding show biz
career? doesn't seem like it occured to you or anybody else that he should also be making time for the family.
i'm not pointing a finger at you, i'm saying it's most people. lots of them women too. and it's fucked up.

32. I didn't designate which one of them should be doing anything...
So you're telling me since I mentioned JLO I also have to mention something about her husband? Was the article about whoever her SO is? No I dont think so. The article was about JLO and her saying she couldn't be a good mother and have a career. What her husbands opinion is doesnt matter.

35. anytime you catch yourself saying "the mother should..." stop a second
and realize it's sexist to not voice any expectations on the other human being responsible for that child. whether or not he's mentioned in the article, he exists.
otherwise you're perpetuating a very unfair and sexist status quo.

36. I never said your mother should...
I would in fact think its unfair to try and voice an opinion about someone I know nothing about. I cannot comment on her SO because I dont know his what he thinks.

37. now you're talking about MY mother? i NEVER brought my mom into this....
but whatever dude.
okay, so at this point the dad's off the hook because he's not been mentioned in terms of child rearing? that's pretty much the problem, no one, including yourself thinks he is actually obligated to make any sacrifices, yet they are comfortable telling the woman what she should do. sorry, that's incredibly sexist, and you're just making excuses at this point.

At some point during our conversation you have managed to twist everything we've talked about and make up a completely new argument. How could I possibly have said he is not "obligated to make any sacrifices" when my last post in this conversation was telling you that I will not comment on him?

I guess its pretty easy to think you're right when you make things up, huh?

Good for them.

41. And yet
Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn, Susan Sarandon, Jessica Lange, Sissy Spacek, and numerous others have raised children who are at least as stable and happy as other young adults. And Chelsea Clinton seems to be a very intelligent and charming young woman...and her parents definitely had very hectic careers.
I disagree. You can be a good mother. And a star.
And you can be a truly horrible mother and be home 24-7.

12. Perhaps for someone too lazy to
put up with children, too uppity to stop spending as much time and money on themselves, and too self-centered to actually realize that millions of women are doing just that, day after day, year after year in this country and almost every other developed country in the world.

16. I'll pass that on to my single mother friends...
As well as my lower income friends that choose to work because they just HATE spending time with their children. Working at Target is sooooo much better than family time.

Oh wait... is she chastizing women who makes millions a year and can afford to take time off, but then don't?
Oh.. ok... well, I don't know much about their lives. They must deserve her moralizations.

She explains: "Either you are going to be a bad mom and be a really good career woman and wife, or a good mom and career woman and bad wife, or a good mom and a good wife and your career is going to suck."

Or you can strike out.

J-Lo, sacrifice--give up the career, please!

31. Obviously haven't met my mother.
I'm still living at home -- just don't have the money to live on my own in today's economy -- and have really come to appreciate my mother as I've gotten older.

She's worked hard (as has my father) to support her family for as long as I've been alive, and I've never wanted for anything that I genuinely needed. I grew up healthy and happy, and I'm now pursuing my own dreams. If that's not a sign of a successful mother *and* career woman, I don't know what is.

40. Is she somehow trying to rationalize the fact that she is childless?
If so, she should stick to speaking for herself and not try to condemn millions of women that do so, with and without support every day.
