Rock music instrumentals?
For a video I'm making, I could use a rock music instrumental recorded 1980-2005, as least 3 minutes long.

Any suggestions?

1. "Cliffs of Dover" by Eric Johnson is always a popular choice

Or, if you're going for the road less taken, and don't mind a bit of heavy psychedelia, I suggest "Apothecaries Weight" by Kyuss.

2. Thanks,Cliffs of Dover might work.
When you say it's "always a popular choice," do you mean it's used in other liberal videos?

21. I mean they play it all the time on the radio
It's one of those few instrumentals that's actually a big hit. I never hear Steve Vai or Satriani on the radio (though I don't mind since I'm not a big shred fan). Just a really catchy tune.

3. Stream of Conciousness by Dream Theater
This song is incredible, but perhaps a bit long for your purposes (around 10 minutes), but if you haven't heard it... then you should. It is incredible. The level of musicianship in any Dream Theater song is just... mind- blowing.

"Red" by King Crimson is also a wonderful instrumental.

11. "Them or Us", by Zappa. He has a great live version on his "guitar"
album, but I can't remember what he renamed it to for that album.

Watermelons in Easter Hay is fucking gorgeous - and again, take the version off "Guitar", which has the same name.

"Black Napkins" - many excellent versions of that song to be found throughout Zappa's catalog.

"Peaches en Regalia"

"The Black Page No. 2", preferably from the "Live in New York", though the "New Age Version" of it from "Make a Jazz Noise Here" is PHENOMENAL!

"Theme from Sinister Footwear"

(those are all Zappa)

And then there's La Villa Strangiato by Rush - get the live version from "Exit Stage Left" - fucking incredible.

13. Best solo on "Guitar:" "Winos Do Not March."
We'd be here all night if we were to debate which Zappa instrumantal is the best...but I'd definitely have to go for "Peaches."

All my life, I've been looking for music that gives me the same thrill that hearing "Peaches En Regalia" did when I first heard it at age 12. NOTHING comes close, and "PeR" STILL gives me goosebumps every time I hear the "Hot Rats" version.

14. Winos Do Not March - I agree with you!
That was my favorite when I first listened to it, and still is. Though "Watermelon in Easter Hay" is a second runner up. And I really love the excessive noise component of the version of "Them or Us" on that album, versus the studio version.

Peaches en Regalia - great stuff! In one my guitar magazines from the late 80s, Zappa said that's the song he's most proud of.

28. This one might work. 'It's not a figure salon' by...
a band called Baby Grand. This song came out in the early part of the time period you specify. It's very upbeat with some really great guitar work. Very distinctive. It has the possible added benefit of being obscure. Nobody's heard this song.
