The original Springsteen lyrics are "revved up like a deuce", but when Manfred Mann's Earth Band decided to cover it they were trying to figure out the lyrics from the original Springsteen version, from his debut where he sings in a more garbled Dylan-esque style. Hence the weird and incorrect, but unforgettable lyrics "wrapped up like a douche"!

This has troubled me for a long, long time. Why would anyone want to resemble a douche I wondered, even a wrapped one ? Now at last I know the truth : no-one does. Well, no-one besides Manfred Mann.
