Has anyone seen the movie, "March of the Penguins?"
If so, what did you think? Is it kid friendly? It sounds like their might be some mating/birthing scenes that might be a bit much for kids, but it is rated "G."

Thanks for any input.

1. Yes all that sex in the movie will make your kids go bad
Seriously, they'll end up sniffing shoe polish and refusing to finish their veggies at dinner

Your kids will love the movie. For the few sad/scary moments (baby freezing to death) it is overwhelmed with amazing and adorable penguins

Can't go wrong with stuff like this:

11. Oh I don't know. When I was a kid, I watched a cartoon about

penguins. One of them had an egg stolen and it was replaced by a rock. All the other little penguins hatched, but the rock didn't. Yet the penguin continued to sit on it. In the end he drowned, because he tried to swim with that rock. I cried for days after seeing that cartoon.
If the kid is very sensitive, I wouldn't let him/her see something with very sad scenes in it.

58. One of the best documentaries I've ever reviewed.
I gave "March of the Penguins" a big thumbs up and so did my husband. We have a sensitive granddaughter, age 7, and decided that it might not be right for her -- but told her parents to DEFINITELY see it and enjoy it for themselves. My grandson, age 5, is quite a bit more resilent and unafraid. I think you have to judge this sort of thing for yourself.

One note of caution: I don't think any young child should see "Grizzly Man" and a lot of adults may be upset by the film also. It may be in your area now. The film is a fascinating and at the same time terrible look at the life of Timothy Treadwell, a self-proclaimed "protector" of the Alaskan brown bears, who spent 13 summers in Alaska living with them. Director Werner Herzog has done an amazing job capturing the life and death of Treadwell and his companion in 2003.

If you're unfamiliar with the story, you may want to visit the website before you take your family to this movie, thinking it's just another nature documentary. It isn't...

http://www.lionsgatefilms.com/profile/grizzlyman.php

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0427312/combined

Timothy Treadwell's amazing nature photography is still visible at:

In peace,

Radio Lady

70. Kids are more resilient than we give them credit for
As for the sad/scary stuff.... it's inevitable. And necessary. It helps teach them empathy - to care for other living beings, to feel for them. Depending of course on how the parent handles the fear or sadness of the child. The kids are already feeling these things. Something like this helps put it in context and open communication between parent and child on topics each has a hard time broaching with the other.

And it's only a movie. So it's safe for the kids. And hardly a porno bloodfest, so it's safe for the adult to take the kid to it.

It's a good movie for kids.

Khash.
(But Bambi fucked me up big time!)

2. I saw it with my 4, 6 and 7 year old kids.
Edited on Sat Aug-06-05 03:09 PM by Pirate Smile
This web site mentions everything in the movie and will give you a good idea of if your kids can handle it or not.

http://www.kids-in-mind.com/m/marchofthepenguins.htm - whoops, link was screwed up at first.

It is nature which can be cruel. Eggs crack, babies die, seals eat penguins. Those were the three things that happened that upset my kids but it wasn't a major problem. They calmed down quickly.

It depends on how sensitive your kids are and their ages.

edit to add - the one "sex" scene is innocuous and kids won't even get it.

certain things happened, they didn't dwell on it and stay upset.

Go ahead and give it a try.

8. Our 5 Y.O. LOVED it,...
Edited on Sat Aug-06-05 03:20 PM by MarianJack
...and so did ChicaAzul and I.

There is content that shows how hard nature can be, but nothing explicit.

A couple of good examples would be where a mother penguin is caught be a leopard seal and where a chick is caught by a sea gull. You see them caught but not eaten.

At one point an old penguin lies down and dies but my son thought he was taking a nap.

At another point it shows a penguin who started too late walking along but you don't see him not making it.

Of course, As I said in a previous thread (that I started), I'd listen to Morgan Freeman read my shopping list!

GO and enjoy! Its a great family movie!

Looks HUGE for a fulmar, but I've never birded down there so I don't know what the word is on marauding seabirds.

here's a discussion on the topic

they're leaning towards southern giant petrel, and they seem to be looking in Harrison, which I haven't had a chance to look in yet.

They lay eggs.

Then the eggs hatch.

That's where baby penguins come from.

there are a lot of birds that swim under water.
