yoicks!!! . . . there may yet be hope for America's youth . . .
some years ago, I used to make little custom music tapes for friends and relatives . . . they seemed to enjoy them a lot, and kept asking for more . . . anyhow, I gave several to my best friend (of 35 years) a few years back, which he liked a lot . . . during a recent conversation, he told me (quite happily) that his 15-year-old son (who also happens to be my godson) has been listening to one of these tapes, apparently over and over and over . . . now this is a kid who, for the past several years, has listened to nothing but Eminem and other rap, hip hop, and assorted AM radio garbage . . . I asked which tape it was, discovered I'd made myself a copy, and decided to play it tonight . . . I was amazed! . . . that this kid is turned on by these tunes warms my heart and gives me at least some hope for the younger generation! . . .

in case you're curious, here's what the kid's listening to . . . over, and over, and over . . . :)

Side 1

1. Preacher's Boogie Woogie - Preacher Jack
2. Going Up The Country - Canned Heat
3. Statesboro Blues - David Bromberg
4. Madison Blues - George Thorogood and the Destroyers
5. Sweet Virginia - Rolling Stones
6. Good Old Acapella - Persuasions
7. Cry To Me - Solomon Burke
8. Bring It On Home To Me - Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes
9. Boogie Albert - Long John Baldry

Side 2

1. Don't Put That Thing On Me - David Bromberg
2. It's Too Late - Derek and the Dominoes
3. Hypnotized - Fleetwood Mac
4. Into The Mystic - Van Morrison
5. Your Saving Grace - Steve Miller Band
6. Minstrel's Song - Moody Blues
7. Waiting On A Friend - Rolling Stones
8. Happy Trails - Don McLean

1. There's no hope for me...
I love to listen to music groups such as Eminem, Linkin Park, Disturbed, AFI, rock/rap/punk........list goes on. I never even heard any of those songs on that list.

6. but theres' still hope . . . :)
nothing wrong with listening to what you like (and I certainly didn't mean to offend), but I find it's always exciting to expand your musical horizons . . . you'll be amazed how much great (not good . . . GREAT!) music is out there from 30, 40, 50 years ago, even longer . . . I myself continue to uncover incredible music that I somehow missed over the years (particularly from the jazz era) . . . if you like rock, listen to some Stones, Doors, Who, Joplin, Hendrix, and other 60s legends and you'll be hooked . . . :)

8. I just took an intro to music class...
and I am starting to love music from the Rennaisance (sp), Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods. Nothing more relaxing than listening to nice, peaceful sonatas.

I never understood all that stuff until I happened to go to work for an early music festival back in the early 80s . . . soon learned the difference between Handel and Mozart, and still love it all . . . :)

9. One thing the youngsters just seem to HATE for some reason...
Edited on Sat Nov-08-03 03:48 AM by RandomKoolzip
is melody. I don't get it; for me, the melody of a song is why I listen to music in the first place. I'm 28 years old and have to admit I never got into dance music or beat-driven music....but it seems as though people under 25 just want that fuckin' metronomic jackboot beat all the time and no melody whatsoever. The textures they seem to luxuriate in make me cringe, all that slick downtempodrumnbasstriphophiphopradioheadnineinchnailsy pro tools shit. Fuck man, The Beatles were the biggest band ever because the raw but precise SOUND of their melodies opened an entire generation's third eye. This new generation venerates the cult of the DJ and the turntable over the concept of the small band format of buddies working together as musicians-this smells of doom to me; I'd hate to predict that the solipsism inherent in DJ-controlled dance music will be your generation's musical legacy.

Anybody under 25: go immediately to your nearest independent music store and immediately buy:

Guided By Voices: Bee Thousand
John Lennon: Plastic Ono Band
Otis Redding: Otis Blue
The Frogs: It's Only Right and Natural
Motorhead: Ace of Spades
The Who: Sell Out
The Dismemberment Plan: Change
Marvin Gaye: Let's Get it On
Husker Du: New Day Rising
Squirrel Bait: Skag Heaven
Toots and the Maytals: Funky Kingston

You will thank me later, I swear.
