3. He slept with Maggie and collapsed afterwards. He had
a brain hemmorhage. The docs said he was going to get better, then at the end of the episode last week, he died. That's pretty much the nitty gritty.

Still in shock they killed him off.

5. This is what happened....
Nate slept with that smarmy little ferret (as Brenda calls her), Maggie.

God promptly struck him down with another brain thing.

He came out of the coma and told Brenda it was over and while David and he were resting their eyes in the hospital, Nate just died and we got a fade to white.

12. Alan Ball decided this is the end.
Maybe this is what he planned or maybe he decided to go out on top. So many shows continue just for syndication and turn into such crap (The X-Files) that although I will miss this show tremendously the time has come, according to Mr. Ball, to say good bye.

14. I think it's a smart move
A concept this bold can only go so far before it settles into tedium. SFU almost "jumped the shark" last season with all the implausible bed-hopping, but it pulled itself out of the hole before it was too late.

33. The actors are all signed to 5-year contracts
I think he felt that they should end at this time when the whole cast was intact. Usually once contracts come under negotiation you start losing a few of the stars and I don't think Alan Ball wanted the show to be some sort of revolving door with incoming/outgoing stars. It's best this show ends while it is on top instead of letting it become mediocre

19. Absolutely! Most awesome line!
Gotta say this episode hit so close to home. I lost my best friend, Mike, back in '98. He had been having seizures when he was asleep. and no one was able to diagnose him...part of me thinks he just stopped going to the docs because if something were horribly wrong, he would lose his job as air traffic controller at SEATAC.
One night when he was pulling swing shift, and taking his turn for sleep, his buddy went to check on him when he didn't show up on time. He found Mike dead...he had had another seizure that resulted in bleeding in the brain...he never woke up.

I still miss Mike, and I still think of him often. We'd been close friends for 20 years. He had asked me to marry him at least three times, but I couldn't...I loved him like a friend, not a lover. Maybe he knew something then that I'm only beginning to understand now at this late date...

When he died, I flew to Washington to help his brother, Chris, with the funeral arrangements and all. Chris was beside himself with grief. We were staying at Mike's house. I had to answer the door every time someone came by...Mike had a lot of friends, most I had never met. Every time I answered the door, people I didn't know knew me, called me by name, and told me they knew me right away because Mike had told them I was the love of his life, and either through description, or pics they had seen, they knew me, threw their arms around me, and...it was almost all beyond belief. Everyone who showed up ended staying at Mike's for two days..it was The Big Chill...and more. It was intense. It was sweet. It was wonderful as everyone had so many Mike stories to tell.

Anyway...I still miss Mike. This last SFU really hit me hard.

Thanks...this one's for Mike

24. Thanks
I cried a lot watching SFU tonight and thinking of Mike.

I figured the best thing to do would be to let it all out here...and now am also thinking of going to WA in about a month to enjoy the view and to visit his grave.

Any DU'ers near Kent? ...anyway...seems about time to take a step back in my life and review where I am and where I want to go from this juncture in my life. Maybe the trip and going to Mike's grave will give me the time to reflect, to make some hard decisions...maybe there's a karmic experience calling me...I only know am at a real crossroads in my life right now, and the thought of Mike is comforting :-)

Smile :D and Party On!

Mike woulda wanted it that way!

20. I was aggravated at Ruth the whole episode...
I know Ruth was struggling with her loss in this episode, but she managed to kinda pull it together in spots. How dare she keep Maggie at her side almost the whole funeral, and not once say anything kind to Brenda? Also, at some point in the funeral, Maggie collapses in tears, and there's Ruth, hugging and comforting Maggie! Brenda is off to one side, standing there with Claire. Then when Brenda brings Maya over to Ruth's house, not once did Ruth ever say anything comforting to Brenda. That made me sooo mad at her. Don't get me wrong, I think Brenda is pretty nuts, and has done some crazy stuff. Certainly, she hasn't endeared herself to Ruth. They did kinda 'bond' at that woman's party a few episodes back, but that's about all I remember. But still, Ruth being older, and knowing how it felt to lose a husband, should have been a little more warm to Brenda, IMHO.

28. Brenda and Ruth have never been close
They don't seem to have ever formed any sort of bond and Ruth and Maggie were close for a time because of George. It was wrong of her but is consistent with their relationship. Ruth seemed caught off guard at the end of the episode. She is dealing with quite a bit also and I don't think she has ever properly grieved for Nathaniel.

If Maya's lucky, Brenda won't ever return for her.

And I thought it was great that the best comments at the service were given by the very man Ruth abandoned.

Edited on Mon Aug-08-05 01:31 AM by devilgrrl
To be perfectly honest, she always struck me as kind, genuine as opposed to fuckin' Brenda. Brenda and her season of anonymous sex, her up fucked family - though her mother showed glimpses compassion in tonight's episode... for once. Nate was right, it was just drama beween the two of them.

32. I was ambivilant about her....
But she should have said "no" when it came to having sex with Nate. And her constantly making goo goo eyes at Nate. I felt sorry for her in a lot of ways, but at the same time, she was far too passive.

Brenda made great strides in cleaning up her act the last couple of years. She got help with the sex addiction thing. She went back to school to become a psychologist. Yeah, there was drama, but Nate wasn't much better. Despite all the ups and downs, Brenda really did love Nate and that counts for a lot in my book.

49. I agree, because nate had his sex problems too. he seems to make
up excuses for his wandering sex act. going after maggie was no different he was just looking for an excuse, and if he had hooked up with maggie he would have come up with an excuse to cheat on her.

34. Nate was just as selfish as Brenda was
And Maggie knew he was a married man.

The only thing I was upset about was how they portrayed the Quakers (which if I go to church - it's usually a quaker meeting). They made them seem kinda flaky when in reality it's an amazing organization that is very peace oriented.

But I loved the scene where Maggie drops off a quiche. The interaction between her and Brenda was priceless

but just going to church and kicking back and enjoying the peace and quite looked pretty good to me.

35. Maggie slept with a married man
whose wife is pregnant, she's a tramp. I don't care what the reasons were or all the circumstances, if Nate and Maggie wanted to be together then they could have waited until he ended things with Brenda.
I have always liked Nate and Brenda because both characters are flawed.

37. I agree absolutely
Personally, I feel Nate is even worse than Brenda because he went fishing for trouble when you could tell that Brenda was losing it with all her baby talk. After Nate & Brenda lost their first baby (2 days before the wedding), when she got over excited to try again he should have taken both of them to counseling.

39. One of the things...
I liked the most about the episode was how Nate's choice of a funeral made them "fish out of water" at an event that a family of morticians would have normally have felt very safe and comforable with. Most of the familiar rituals of death that would have allowed them to focus on something other than Nate and almost sleepwalk through his funeral were missing.

I think we saw this best at the gravesite. Name another time Rico and David would have had any trouble taking a body out of the hearse, or knowing the appropriate way to place it in the ground, or what happened next.
These "professionals" were forced to be as awkward and uncomfortable as regular folks are during a funeral. It was brilliant. Nate's death was in their face in a way it wouldn't have been had he been buried or cremated.

I loved how Claire went to the funeral in her regular clothes (I think Nate would have loved it) and stepped in at the gravesite to help lower his body.

I cried a a lot during the episode.

Edited on Mon Aug-08-05 12:57 PM by KzooDem
The Brenda character is a schizoid bitch from hell. I figured she'd do something fucked up and self-centered like refusing to care for Maya. You know Brenda won't be coming back for Maya.

Frankly, I wish the whole obnoxious Chenoweth clan would have been "killed off" in one of the previous seasons.

47. Did you miss the preview for next week?
Where Brenda is arguing with Ruth about custody?

It's not like a single member of the family was giving Brenda, the pregnant widow, any help with Maya during the whole funeral process. They pretty much left her to fend for herself, didn't they? They even invited the woman her husband cheated on her with to the funeral. That's pretty fucked up.
