Okay, so I want to learn html.
I already know the basics, but I want to learn how to do fancy layouts because I don't want my page to look like ass. It's not going to be a business site or anything (god knows the web is commercialized enough as it is), it's purely going to be for ogling pretty boys from video games and posting dirty fanfiction about them.

Does anyone have any advice on where to start?

3. Ooooh, you read my mind. I've been dying to learn.
Once again, got the basics, would appreciate fleshing them out as much as is possible when you're self-taught. GOT to love the DU.

14. Oh it is.
Believe me, it is. Around 30,000 nerds take over downtown Baltimore for a weekend. It's hilarious.

I mean, you walk into a Burger King and see a ninja eating fries with a cat girl and a Shinto priestess, and a guy with a spiky blonde wig and a six foot paper mache sword asking the confused girl behind the counter if there's any sweet and sour sauce for his nuggets. :D

8. This is the tutorial I learned from to start
http://www.davesite.com/webstation/html/

If you want a free html editor/assist, download Arachnophilia. It will write the code for you, but you can learn from it too.

How much do you know?

11. Hmm
Well, around ten years ago I made a couple of sites, and I still know the basic tags...how to put pictures up, how to do links, etc. I never learned how to do tables when that was still the big thing to do for layouts, and about the fanciest trick I know how to do is to make links without the underline. So I guess you could say I'm an advanced beginner/not quite intermediate.

Thanks for the link to that program, I will have to try it out if it's compatible with Mac OS9.

12. Hmm, not sure about Mac compatible
But that was the program that I learned to do tables.

Another thing you can do. When you see something on a website you like, click on View Source and see how its coded on the page. Now somethings on pages you can't just take, that would be stealing, but you can learn code that way..

Dave's tutorial is good for all the basic codes.

17. If you don't know how to do tables
that's a very good place to start.

Tables let you position things very neatly.

16. A good way to do it
If you're good with Photoshop. Is to create a graphic of what you want the site to look like (make it no more than 750-770 pixels wide). Then you bring in the blue rulers to show you how to cut the site up into smaller graphics, and you put them into tables along with where you want your content to go.

It's kind of difficult to understand, but I can send you some examples if you pm me.

19. This is a really useful design-related site too
http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com

It's sort of a "what not to do" for web design.
