2. Very sad.
Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 10:49 PM by Borgnine
While I always respected Dan Rather the most out of the recent big three anchors, Peter Jennings was my favorite. He had the most soothing voice when reporting bad news, and seemed relatively untainted by the stench of conservative bias.

And I had no idea he was a man in his late '60s. He looked ten years younger than that, at least.

16. He was an enormous comfort on 9/11.
You were right about his voice... on 9/11 I stayed up with him into the wee hours of the morning. I'm pretty sure he was the last of the big three on that night, and he was just so calming.

He was a principled man and a good news anchor.

11. I'm damn near devastated.
I knew he was sick, but I really hoped that he would make it. I had watched him almost literally from the moment he took the anchor chair. I grew up on Peter Jennings. He was the only anchor I ever watched, and there's no one else out there his equal.

Damn. Just, damn.

18. I was stunned.
My uncle died of cancer a year ago, so it just brought all the emotions back for me. Jennings really felt like a part of the family after so many years.

28. Me too. A couple of really bad days -- first Robin Cook, now Jennings,
both way too young.:( I always liked him much more than the others. He was steady and reasonable, very intelligent and pleasure to behold. A true Canadian gentleman. Still hard to believe taht he is no more.

20. I'm 17, and I never remember having any other news show on besides his.
Shit, what a way to ruin my night. Just as I was about to pull an all nighter to watch the space shuttle coverage too...

22. They're talking about he was concerned with the "world" part of world news
Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 11:33 PM by tjdee
tonight...

This is absolutely true--he was the only one, I thought, who had a clear understanding of so much of the world. I remember before we invaded Iraq, he was the only one talking about the museums and historical artifacts in Baghdad...

One guy was just saying that the enormous loss is not so much that it's an anchor, but that it's the loss of a man who actually cared about bringing the world to the US at a time when it was so important to do just that.

23. who do we watch now ?
he was one of the few i trusted. with all the whores everywhere else i would try to tune in to world news. at least i would get reporting on the world and other important events.

i think one reason his reporting was great was because he cared so much about it and had so much personal interest in learning about it even while reporting on it.

yeah, he was attractive and i'm sure it helped him at first to get some of the jobs he got. but it was more than that and i don't know how they will get someone to take his place.

24. I can't watch anyone out there right now.
Schieffer just doesn't do it for me. Williams is unthinkable, as are the cable "news" shows.

26. i like Ted Koppel
but he has already gone into semi retirement and it just seems like they are doing all they can to cancel nightline if you look at the show these days.

it's pathetic. i don't expect someone who will appeal as Jennings did right away but i can't even think of anyone i could say is decent.

it might have to be someone who is an uknown but proves themselves because all the personalities i can think of just don't have it.

25. There is no one trustworthy anymore.
I don't know. The only remote possibility I can think of right now is Terry Moran, who I expected to one day take over. But he's just WH right now I think, and they'll probably try to pull Charlie Gibson back for news?

I don't know.

27. I respected him because
he wasn't afraid to take on the contriversial topics. I recorded the news magazine show he did 2 years ago on extacy; it was well done and informative; he seemed to be open to all sides of the story.
He will be missed.
My mother passed from lung cancer Jan of 2004.
