Tomorrow I complain to the college president about the professor |
|
who tried to proselytize me.
Awhile back, I called a hospital to complain about a nurse who treated me cruelly when I was in the ER. I told the head of nursing I thought the nurse should be fired for what she did, but the head of nursing didn't seem to agree. She thought a "meeting" to discuss proper patient care would fix the problem. Yeah. Sure. Right. If ever someone needed firing, this nurse does.
I don't think the prof should be let go, but I feel he should be watched to make sure he doesn't do the same thing to somebody else. That's the only reason I'm complaining. Sigh. Wish me luck.

3. State school, of course. In a private school, I'd have nothing to |
|
complain about, probably.

It's hard to take on the status quo. Colleges, hospitals, corporations are all kingdoms all their own.

5. Is this a sectarian school? |
|
Proselytizing is not a healthy thing at any college or university that claims to honor freedom of conscience and a free exchange of ideas. But at a sectarian school it would be allowed.

...whenever you can (just realized that could be a bad thing if this becomes a legal battle). Inquiring minds and all.

12. Maybe sending a letter and ccing a state official or two would help? |
|
at least as a follow-up after your call. In my experience a call alone gets nothing done, even if the person doesn't intentionally blow you off it's easier to forget about a phone call than a letter sitting on your desk.
There should be a anti-discrimination office or something you can contact for assistance. At least you can get a complaint in the guy's file to establish a pattern if it happens to somebody else.

13. Did you feel as though your grade was in jeopardy? |
|
It would be inappropriate if he made you feel that your progress in class depended on your religious views (or your agreeing with his views). It would also be incorrect if he used class time for an irrelevant bout of preaching. However, if he was merely giving you a spiel outside of class, then I really don't think you have much recourse other than to say "no thanks" and walk away. Professors are as free as anyone else to advocate pretty much anything they want, as long as they don't cross boundaries like grade-blackmail, stalking, etc.
What you ought to do, if you want to get back at him, is drop by his next office hours and spend the whole time lecturing him on some topic that you feel particularly strongly about...
Cruel nurses, of course, are particularly evil...

14. Can you file an anonymous complaint? |
|
Edited on Mon Aug-08-05 01:55 AM by Old_Fart
I filed one years ago when I was in College and my life became a living hell afterwords. The professor was canned years later for the same reasons that I had complained about. When I filed one everything was alright and then I had to file one more and I am not a complainer. The second one was over a grade not being put down into a grade book that caused my GPA to fall drastically. After I filed the second complaint I was put on a shit list. I ended up transferring to another college and I didn't get the degree that I wanted until several years later.

15. Yes, I've decided to keep it anonymous. |

I was going to tell the prof, but decided it wouldn't be a good idea. :( I still may want to take classes from him. He was, supposedly, a friend, but the whole proselytization issue screwed that up pretty good. If he hears about this from the president, he'll probably know who filed the complaint.
The whole thing has been a mess and of course, fundies are always right and if you try to fight them, they think they are being persecuted for righteousness' sake.
I've waited a long time to file this complaint. I have to do it to bring closure to the episode.

Maybe your local ACLU can help. They helped me in NC over the graduation dress code deal. I got to wear dress pants instead of a dress to graduation thanks to them. Before I contacted them, the school was giving me a hard time telling me it was "your graduation, we want it to be formal". I still can't figure out what their logic was on that one...
