when did 'LiberaL' become a term of derision?
and 'LiberaLism' a disease of the mind? :o

some psycho wrote an LTTE in today's boston metro concerning the homeLess.... and how they're Lousy bums, with stoLen shopping carts... and that the homeLess ranks are ripe for aL-queda... and those unchecked, stoLen shopping carts can hoLd a huge bomb....
and being "proggessive" or "LiberaL" is the reason for homeLess bums..
the LTTE ends with, "as the good doctor said, LiberaLism is a disease of the mind".

3. Yup
He was also the first one to throw a bone to the anti-choice types and once declared that he wasn't too sure about the theory of evolution. We have a lot to thank that asshole for.

Reagan and the Homeless Epidemic in America

"...In fact many homeless rights activists say the single most devastating thing Reagan did to create homelessness was when he cut the budget for the Department of Housing and Urban Development by three-quarters, from $32 billion in 1981 to $7.5 billion by 1988. The department was the main governmental supporter of subsidized housing for the poor. Add this to Reagan's overhaul of tax codes to reduce incentives for private developers to create low-income homes and you had a major crisis for low-income families and individuals. Under Reagan, the number of people living beneath the federal poverty line rose from 24.5 million in 1978 to 32.5 million in 1988..."

9. Even before that. You can thank Nixon and his crowd.
Agnew, Pat Buchanan (then working in the White House as a speechwriter). The Nixon White House was the first to denigrate the word "liberal"

5. Who is the good doctor?
Edited on Mon Aug-08-05 11:02 AM by primate1
The only good doctor I know is a doctor of journalism who would never have said such a thing.

On a technicality, he would be right about liberalism being a cause of homelessness. That is, if you use liberal in the traditional context of laissez faire capitalism. That would be a reason for homelessness. Liberalism in the more modern American sense of the word (the way it is normally used around here), however, would most certainly not be.

8. Limbaugh, Boortz, Hannity, Savage, et al talk about "evil liberals"
and "un-patriotic liberals" and "anti-American liberals" over and over and over again, day after day, year after year.

It is nothing more than a Republican talking point which many people believe because most of the sheeple are too stupid, uneducated and ill-informed to actually know or look up the many definitions of liberal.

12. "The good doctor" = Michael "Savage" Weiner, Ph.D.
I wish the correspondence school he got that doctorate from would revoke it.

13. which "good doctor" was that?
Sounds like your poster musta migrated from Texas. Forty years ago all them neegras woulda been both the reason and the lousy bums ripe for al-kaheeda, followed by them thar jews and Mexkins and them immoral flouting homoseckshiluls.

Always gotta be hatin' something - it's just who they are. What on earth would have stirred this loon to pick up pen and paper and write an LTTE?

The blinding conviction and irrefutable logic of his views, I guess.

Closed head injury has many outcomes - some people fling poop, some people post LTTE's.

19. Actually, it was the left that first became disenchanted with "liberal"
In the late 60's, "liberal" came to have something of the overtones that "DLC" does now -- establishment Democrats like Hubert Humphrey who were painfully out of touch with the real issues.

See, for example, Phil Ochs' song, "Love Me, I'm a Liberal."
http://users.powernet.co.uk/hack/sleaze/love_me_liberal.html
Once I was young and impulsive
I wore every conceivable pin
Even went to the socialist meetings
Learned all the old union hymns
But I've grown older and wiser
And that's why I'm turning you in
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

The result was that when the right started using the term as a whipping-boy, there was no one who was prepared to stand up and snarl, "Yeah, I'm a liberal. You wanna make something of it?" By the time it became obvious that the term was being used to blacken the entire left, it was too late to save it.
