I hope there's someone here who can help me with this. Preferably, I'd like a second or third opinion, in the interest of accuracy.
I'm adding a character to my novel who is a low-level marijuana dealer, but I personally haven't smoked it in quite some time, and I don't know anyone who does.
There's an issue that is central to the subplot, involving the purchase of an ounce. However, I have no idea what one would pay. If it matters, the ounce is not bagged into smaller quantities, but is just a full ounce in one bag.
Anyone know the going rate?

Put the price for an ounce at about $300-$350.

I would just put it at 200....
An ounce can go anywhere from 150-300 depending on quality and how close you are to the grower.
So if this character is a low-level street dealer he is paying around 200-250 for an ounce. This is in the northwest.
If he is in the southern US, closer to Mexico than I would make it cheaper.

but I hadn't given any thought to how far the source might be from him ... there's more to consider than I'd realized

bc bud, for transport/snuggling (that is, still in bc canada) goes for about 2700 a pound wholesale. Accumulators will pay on the order of 900 to 1100 a pound for small lots grown by one of the thousands of growers in bc. They save it up, prune it, seal it, and then sell it to lopers for transport.
In US of A, the further away from BC, the more expensive. Of course, way down south in Kalifornia, lower prices for mo-hachian (mexican source) weeds. Even much growing in the US forests and nat parks. Say about 400 to 900 tops per pound.
But the top end N. Kali produce goes very high end, say 1800+ wholesale.
Hawaii....forget about it.
Alaska...well, some top quality stuff there as well.
All will depend on where the buyer is located both geographically and the the weed food chain.

...the Seattle/Tacoma area, and it's of average quality - any opinion (on the price of an ounce, not a pound)?

Its just expensive enough to be realistic, but not too expensive so your readers think the dealer is getting ripped off! 275! We have a winner!

You have Humbolt County in northern California where it is the lowest priority of the Sheriff to pursue under 25 plants. this means there are a lot of plants grown outdoors without electicity and lots of people do it. So from there to Canada, would be prime pot country in my opinion. It could still be two or three hundred for an ounce but if you know someone it could be half that. It would be a good variety of course and without seeds.
You could make up any number and it would be accurate for somebody- $100 to $400. You could run it by the Cheaptalk section of marijuana.com and get some first hand numbers. Pricing threads are common and you could really do a search and find what has been covered many times.

Fiction writers are generally advised to avoid giving specific prices because it can date the work, which can be a problem for a newer writer, because there can be a signficant delay between the time the work is created and the time the work is published.

Dates are very important in this novel, which begins in 1997 and ends in 2004.
Besides, his purchase coincides with some stolen money, which is why the purchase is called into question.

I'm not a big fan of the "dateless" novel that seems to be set in no certain time anyway.

16. Is he buying the ounce or selling it? |
|
Everyone who touches the product will take a cut of the money. If he is a real dealer as opposed to someone who buys and shares with friends for a small handling and gas fee, he'll be buying more than an ounce from the bigger dealer.

He has a real job, but buys by the ounce and sells three or four eighths to lower the cost of his own use.
