Number #1 singles in an alternative universe
Edited on Sat Nov-08-03 04:43 PM by Screaming Lord Byron
Everyone's got their favourite singles that in reality went to #97 for a week when they should have been #1 for at least as long as that Brian Adams song from Robin Hood. I'm talking about skyscraping pop songs that deserved better than they got. Here's three from me to get the ball rolling.

From the US - The Posies, Solar Sister

From Ireland - The Undertones, Love Parade

From Scotland - The Associates, Party Fears Two

1. Great picks
I'd add "The Real Thing" by the Pointed Sticks - Canada, since we're in a sort of poppy vein here.

2. My alternate-universe #1s

Just a few off the top of my head. They all peaked in the lower reahces of the Billboard Hot 100:

The Jacks, "Why Don't You Write Me?" (1955)
Little Willie John, "Let Them Talk" (1960)
Chuck Berry, "Let It Rock" (1960)
Jackie DeShannon, "When You Walk in the Room" (1964)

4. Husker Du "Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely"
That SHOULD have been what exploded alternative into the mainstream and changed the face of popular music instead of Nirvana's second rate Husker Du rip offs.
