5. Edward Hopper is my favorite painter of all-time
Flat-out; every painting tells a haunting story..

"Excursion into Philosophy" has always been my favorite:

16. Absolutely.
I have about a jillion favorite painters, but I especially love those who ably express that certain individual and collective loneliness.

23. He nailed it, too
The shadows and darkness he created in his paintings tell more than the colors, I think; it's like somebody like Sherwood Anderson in "Winesburg, Ohio" (which is a huge influence on my own writing) where the spare prose creates a much more emotional power than the Thomas Wolfe-inspired prose that goes on and on...

28. Yes, the cool shadows create a mood
that's thoughtful and a little melancholy without being angry or brooding. Some of Hopper's work reminds me of Kerouac's more thoughtful and lonely writing.

45. Somewhere along the line . . .
Kerouac lost his innocense. (It was after "On The Road" but before "Big Sur," I think.) But I guess that happens to everyone and may be the price of Dharma.

49. I say "Big Sur"
Though it's probably my favorite book by him, it's the one where the beginning of the end of his life takes place, and in a very real sense, the thrill was gone..

it's not one that I can re-read every year like "On The Road." It's like watching a painful episode unfold, somehow.

19. Well I've got a few stories on the back burner
And one of them is very relevant considering that I'm giving up bad habits. It's about a time that I spent 4 days laid over in Reno, NV right by a casino. It's where I discovered black jack- a game that would almost be my undoing.

I just haven't felt much like writing stories lately. I'll get back into it some day soon and I'll make sure that I do it on the night shift for all of the nighthawks.

51. Not really
The only thing close to that that I have is my workout log. I keep track every day of how much I lift that way I can remember what I'm working out with. It's also cool to see how I've progressed.

I am pen pals with a couple of people, though, and we e-mail each other every day. That's just stuff that is going on in my life at the time. So I'm guess I sort of keeping a journal. It's just one that other people read.

It's nearly 2 AM, school starts tomorrow. She's nervous and excited at the same time. I can't sleep until she does. At this point, I don't think I'll sleep until after they get to school...I'll end up sleeping through the alarm. After I drop them in the morning, I've got to go to a temp agency to turn in a piece of paper so that maybe they can find me a job. Then, maybe, I'll sleep. I doubt it though. I'll probably put on a pot of coffee and continue Cindy Watch.

93. Just wanted to let you know . . .
that I really appreciate the stand you've taken about racist mascots. Being 1/8 Cherokee, growing up in the Cherokee Nation, and attending a college with a sports mascot called "The Redmen," I find those mascots insulting. You and Joby made some excellent points, and I would have joined in if I hadn't had to do my weekly (and loathed) grocery shopping.

Have a hug, my friend Bill.

Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 03:04 AM by LastKnight
you donno how many nights ive sat up reading at denny's or similar resturants... studying, or just sittin there passing the time with my thoughts and a pot of coffee.

love it. so quiet (cept when the guy with the vaccuum backpack comes around, but he's quick) something i like about the lone night lifestyle. this reminds me of that. must be the guy sittin off by himself... with his hat pulled down almost over his eyes sayin 'dont talk to me unless you need to' but not in an unfriendly way.

129. Same here.
Mr. Heidi sponsored me, and once a year I have to report to the "Department of Strangers" (really, that's the English translation of the Italian name of the immigration department here). I guess because this is a small country, the "process" moves a little more quickly.

I just found out that in order to get dual citizenship, I'll have to be interviewed in Italian. I have some serious concerns about that, so language classes, here I come. :eyes:

German, French, Italian and Romanche, and each state has one or more of those languages as its "official language." I'd be OK if I could be interviewed in German, but Italian is the official language of Ticino.

135. I won't make an interview appointment
until I'm _certain_ I'm prepared to speak Italian for half an hour with a state police officer. (That's who conducts the interview, and they just ask you what you do for a living, how long you've been here, etc.)

It could be worse, though. Used to be, states could mandate these odd citizenship tests, like the "cheese test" in Apenzell, when citizenship candidates had to identify about 32 kinds of cheese. That's a true story, by the way. Where I live, it'd be something like identify 50 kinds of pasta or 12 kinds of red wine. :eyes: I'm really, really glad they don't do that stuff anymore.

128. I'm in? Coolness!
Graph theory involves a bunch of dots on a piece of paper, some of which are connected by edges. The edges might cross, as in the Petersen graph:

Then you can ask all kinds of questions - for example, how far away (travelling along edges) can two of the dots get.

It's actually not really a hobby - it is my research area. But it is so much fun, I think of it as a hobby!

I have a peculiar math dysfunction: I don't "get it" unless I can couch it in terms of language or art. If geometry, algebra, trig, calculus, etc. had been taught to me as a language or an art when I was young, I think I would have loved it. Like this:

Not too bad. Just caught up on some reading. Watched pro wrestling and ordered some food. Waaaayy too many onion rings. I need to get back in the gym. My diet is so bad my heart is going to explode here in another few years if I don't start being healthy again. After years as a health nut I think I got a little too used to fast food in the last 4 or 5 years.

162. there is something so romantic about late night diners
Like in this. These people are all so solitary, yet they have a group dynamic because they all share the night. That experience. The feeling of being alive when everything around you is silent. Except where you are at. This diner. A living breathing organism, in and of itself. The taste of late night coffee. Rich aroma permeating into the air. Wisps of steam threading into the night. There is romance in solitude. Quiet joy in embracing the night in it's loneliest hours. To me, night has always been a good friend. One that encourages my creativity. Never judges my dreams. I hold night dear. And, this diner reminds me why I do so.

183. I found this interesting.
Paintings such as Nighthawks (Art Institute of Chicago, 1942) convey a mood of loneliness and desolation by their emptiness or by the presence of anonymous, non-communicating figures. But of this picture Hopper said: `I didn't see it as particularly lonely... Unconsciously, probably, I was painting the loneliness of a large city.' Deliberately so or not, in his still, reserved, and blandly handled paintings Hopper often exerts a powerful psychological impact -- distantly akin to that made by the Metaphysical painter de Chirico; but while de Chirico's effect was obtained by making the unreal seem real, Hopper's was rooted in the presentation of the familiar and concrete.

184. There's no accounting for perception, I guess.
I think one of the reasons "Nighthawks" is so open to interpretation of solitude, loneliness (or aloneness) is that the style is so direct and simple (which I love).

Here's a painting I made a couple of years ago of a child I know very well . . . he's a serious little boy, but not a sad or lonely child, but others who saw the painting said I should have painted him "happier." That's what I mean about perception.

242. No, I don't have a digital camera yet. saving for a nice one.
Little Dell is an orange kitten about 4 months old and already runs the other cats.

She was a surprise kitten, didn't plan on another cat but there was just something special about her.

I named her Dell because she has a thing for computers, she thinks she can type but her spelling isn't so great.

234. not too bad, buddy!
Lazed around and ended up watching a documentary about when World Chess champion Gary Kasparov played the IBM Computer Deep Blue. It was really interesting.

Been a relaxing day actually. Thanks for asking.

So how about yourself?

235. It was a beautiful Saturday here . . .
Made a chocolate pie, harvested the last of my blackberries, started putting the finishing touches on a large (150 x 50 cm) oil on panel painting, then last night watched a really interesting documentary about how boat and plane accidents in the Burmuda triangle may be caused by methane gas rising from the ocean floor. Have you ever heard that theory?

240. It's always huge
Martin is the guy who always wins the most money on the tour, but Ferbey's the guy who wins the Brier titles.

They both have Curling shops in town; I've only been to Ferbey's though. And Martin is kinda the Ned Flanders of the 2, while Ferbey is the loud, drunk, middle-aged guy you see at the local curling rinks, which is why he's an Icon, of course:)

245. yeah you were saying Ferbey
is the hero of middle-aged guys everywhere.

I'm going to have to head up to Edmonton and hit some curling with you. I'll get hammered in the stands and probably get us in a fight. It'll be fun. Well, your wife will have to bail us out, so it might not be fun for her, but for us it'll be.

248. yeah seriously...
you'd love to hit Glacier Park in the summer too. Summer in MT is cool, you got more things going on. Like Indian Days, rodeos and so on. I'm still trying to get info on a lot on ST. Mary's lake. Man, if I can get a grant from my tribe and work out a homesite and get a cabin built I would be in heaven. Be churning out some "Walden" type shit in that case.
