Is a major third going up, a minor sixth going down.

up than down?
Did I mention my musical ignorance?

14. No, it's not a different chord - just that the notes are further away |
|
going down than they are going up, so the interval is different.
Think of it like a clock face - from the 1 to the 3 going clockwise is a step of 2; to go from 1 to 3 counterclockwise is a step of 10.

Here are two c major scales:
c d e f g a b c1 d1 e1 f1 g1 a1 b1 c2
Do is the first note of a scale, and mi is the third note (do re mi fa sol la ti do).
So, DO to MI is from c to e -- c d e -- (in this scale), which is a third (since the first note counts as 1), and in this case, for reasons I won't go into, it's a major interval.
But let's go backwards, MI to DO, using c1 to e - note now that we're going backwards. Count the steps, and you get six -- e f g a b c1 -- (remembering that the first note counts as one step already). In this case, for reasons I won't go into, it's a minor interval.

Sorry to be so dense, but for some reason music theory has always baffled me. Physics, I can handle. Odd, huh?
Thank you for your patience.

I'm glad it's making more sense now.
And then there's the system for determining whether something is major or minor...but we won't get into that.

In the key of A, C# is the major third
In the key of C#, A is the minor 6th
it works the same for any Key
In the Key of C, E is the major 3rd
In the Key of E, C is the minor 6th

Triads only have three notes.
Do mi sol is a nice major triad; but the addition of re and la make it something quite other, especially the way you spelled it out, with sol way up top, and do re mi right at the bottom.
