can you get Mono from a third party?
In other words if someone I see everyday has a relative with mono but is not sick herself, could I get it?

I have swollen glands in my neck like you wouldn't beleive. I am in such pain and I feel like death. I had mono 30 years ago and Epstein Barr 24 years ago. This is how I remmeber feeling then.

Any doctors in the house?

11. I think the joke is, must be a Republican or Democrat,
cannot be a third party. But I can see why this is no laughing matter. Get yourself checked pronto and take care of yourself.
I have 2 sisters and 2 brothers retired teachers and my daughter is a teacher so I have great admiration for you. We need good teachers.

12. okay, now I get it duh!
thanks for the compliment about teachers. My family is chock full of em too. It has taken me years to get back to college to do this. I had to get divorced and pay off all my student loans from 20 years ago myself...long story.
I have other loves and ambitions in my life, but teaching is something I feel the need to do.

Many people are carriers of mono; they never get any symptoms but you can catch it from them.

On edit:

5. Also mentioned
is that those viruses are like herpes - they never completely get eradicated, and will stay in your body for the rest of your life. They may or may not flare up again, so you could be looking at a recurrence.

Go see a doctor ASAP.

6. I will, and thanks for the info
I am student teaching right now, so this really messes up my life. If this is Mono or something else, I am sick as the legendary dog.

7. Sorry you are so sick
I was five when my mother started student teaching. I vividly remember how often she was sick. I have no idea if you have mono, but all new teachers get sick too much. She eventually got immunity and rarely got sick. Get well.

9. So I might be a carrier
I had two boyfriends, including my husband, who got mono. I didn't though. My husband always accused me of being the carrier. I guess that I really could have been.

10. I'm sorry you are sick, a doctor can tell you for sure if you have mono

If you do, you will have to rest a while but people have it and get over it, it is a pain in the butt :)

13. thanks DTF
I feel rotton but I know it will end. My biggest problem is that I am flat broke, student teaching, not working and all that. I have lousy college insurance where I have to fill out 100 forms to get them to pay part of my medical bills. It is really scarey to be this far out on a limb.
I assume I will feel better soon. I am counting on it.

14. Had a mono type virus a few years ago
My doctor gave me a handful of Advil samples and told me to go home get in bed and don't get out for anything for 7 days. He said if possible don't even get up to fix yourself something to eat. I had to do that since I live alone and at the time I only had 3 days of sick time so I stayed sick for a couple weeks longer than I should have since I couldn't follow his orders and went back to work.

When I went back for my follow-up visit and was still pretty sick he cussed me out in a nice grandfatherly way and told me to stay out of work for another 5 days and he had his nurse call my work to explain to them the deal with me. At the time the company was family owned and they worked it out with me that I could still get paid. That would never happen with them now though since the founder retired they've turned into just another corporate beast that doesn't care at all about the workers.

15. Well, you have to work at it pretty hard.
The CDC says:

http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/ebv.htm

In addition, transmission of EBV requires intimate contact with the saliva (found in the mouth) of an infected person. Transmission of this virus through the air or blood does not normally occur. ... However, no special precautions or isolation procedures are recommended, since the virus is also found frequently in the saliva of healthy people. In fact, many healthy people can carry and spread the virus intermittently for life. These people are usually the primary reservoir for person-to-person transmission. For this reason, transmission of the virus is almost impossible to prevent.

On the other hand, if you've had it before, you're unlikely to get it again, and you might have something else. Strep throat in its early stages feels a lot like mono. (I've had both.) Go see the doctor, I guess.

And, can Superman outrun The Flash?
