6. One thing I've noticed about "hammering" these people...
Edited on Wed Aug-10-05 02:55 PM by skypilot
...with facts is that they will say either, "I've never heard that" or "How do you know it's true?"

They are never aware of the facts you bring to their attention or they will simply dispute that it is actually a fact. Even if you show them documentation (or tell them where they can find it) they suddenly want to argue about whether or not you can believe anything you read. In other words, they seem to think, or pretend to think, that everything is unknowable.

Except, of course, if it comes out of the mouth of Bush or a Bush administration official.

8. True
But it often has an effect on people observing the conversation.

11. and then they return to calling liberals "relativists"
they don't have any problem claiming liberals believe there are no absolute truths and that all social standards are relative, but hit them with the facts on some subject and, like you said, they start whining that you can't believe anything you read... anything to avoid accepting facts as facts...

12. What really pisses me off...
Edited on Wed Aug-10-05 03:15 PM by skypilot
...is that they suddenly have skepticism to burn. All these questions about statements of facts and whether or not they can be believed are a bit too little too fucking late. Where was all this skepticism when George was trying to convince us that it was a "fact" that Saddam had WMDs? They swallowed that hook, line and sinker but now suddenly they want to go all epistemological on us. :eyes:

5. Thank God she didn't lose it with that guy -- MY blood pressure is up!
I'd have hung up on the guy when he first started shouting, but she stayed with him and rationally countered every simpering little argument he put out.

GO, RANDI!!!!!

9. I wish I could do that...
Its very hard to do.. It requires ACTUALLY FEELING LOVE FOR THE 'other'. So much that the love compells you to try as hard as you can to persuade.

Its like what Jesus did.

10. She mentioned yesterday that she doesn't "hate" anybody
That's quite a statement in this day and age. I used to try and be that way but these PodPeople have me finding it VERRRRRRY difficult not to use the "h" word, and to keep my cool ...
