All I can say is that Wong-Kar Wai is a fucking genius. What a brilliant film.

1. What? No fans of incredibly brilliant cinema? |
|
There's gotta be someone else here who enjoys Wong Kar-Wai films.

This is actually a film where a synopsis might not be that helpful. WKW is not that into narrative.
2046 is the followup to In The Mood for Love, which swept most of the major awards at Cannes in 2000. It's about a man, still recovering from the effects of what happened in ITMFL, who moves from woman to woman as he vainly tries to recapture what he felt in the first film. It's also shot incredibly beautifully and has a fantastic score. Definitely not for everyone, but in my opinion, WKW is the best director working in the world today.
It stars Tony Leung (best known to American audiences in Hero) and Zhang Ziyi (star of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and House of Flying Daggers)

I'd recommend renting ITMFL first if you can, though it's not totally necessary. The main character in 2046 acts like a cad, and you understand why a lot more easily if you've seen the first film.
