5. Was it Steve McNair?
It couldn't be Doug Williams because the starter got injured and Doug Williams filled in and had an amazing game.

7. Doug Williams
was the starter all year that year. the guy who filled in for the injured starter was running back Jimmy Smith.

Doug Williams was the first black starter (QB) in the Super Bowl.

Marlon Briscoe was moved to WR by the Bills.

9. I am sure he was not the starter in the Super Bowl
Edited on Sat Nov-08-03 10:51 PM by VermontDem2004
I remember watching highlights of the game and the game itself but I can swear to you that he was not the starter all year that year. Aha I found something but it proves nothing about the Super Bowl. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/WillDo01.htm Scroll down to 1987, the Super Bowl year, it only says he played 5 games out of 16. Jay Schroeder was the starter.

About the last sentence, I know.

On edit: the Redskins running back was Timmy Smith.

12. I watched the game too
Maybe he started, but I remember at some point he filled in for the injured starting QB, I think maybe it was the NFC championship or one of the division championships but I can assure you he did not start the entire season, he only played in 1 third of the games. Maybe my memory is a little bit foggy but all I have are memories of him filling in for the injured starter and succeding.

15. Your right
Williams threw only one pass in 1986 and there was no reason for him to expect 1987 to be any different. But when Schroeder was injured in the opening game, Williams was given a chance to start. Later, after Schroeder returned but played erratically, Williams was named the starter, only to lose the job because of an injury. After Williams relieved Schroeder and rallied the Redskins to victory over Minnesota in the final regular-season game, Gibbs installed Williams as his starting quarterback for the playoffs.

He was injured briefly in the Super Bowl but returned, that is what was confusing me. But he didn't start all year that year.

5. 'Skins super in second quarter (Jan. 31, 1988)
The Redskins rout the Denver Broncos 42-10 in Super Bowl XXII. The 'Skins are behind 10-0 before they tear off 35 points in the second quarter, with Doug Williams tossing four TD passes in the quarter. Williams, the first black QB to start a Super Bowl, is named MVP after completing what Washington Post reporters William Gildea and Leonard Shapiro call "one of pro football's greatest big-game performances.” Timmy Smith, a rookie running back starting his first game, rushes for 204 yards, the most in Super Bowl history.

20. I thought the first black QB was Willie Thrower
It's a memorable trivia answer because of the appropos last name. Perhaps he played, but never started, an NFL game.

21. Thats correct
The answer is actually two fold because Briscoe played before the merger so officially, the first black QB to start for an NFL team was James Harris.

24. Briscoe was the #3 receiver in Miami's Perfect Season
He alternated with Howard Twilley opposite the great Paul Warfield. I was a kid in Miami and my family got season tickets beginning in '72.

Marlin Briscoe's gaffe in Super Bowl VII is seldom mentioned, after Garo's late field goal debacle. But that Super Bowl would have been more one-sided on the scoreboard if Briscoe had not started upfield too soon while in motion, drawing a 5 yard penalty and nullifying a long Griese-to-Warfield TD pass in the first half.

26. Not his first year
After he threw 14 touchdown passes in his rookie year the coaches said he was too small to be a quarterback so he demanded Denver to release him which they did and he became a wide reciever at Buffalo.
