Zombie by The Cranberries
Another head hangs lowly Child is slowly taken And the violence caused such silence Who are we mistaken
But you see it's not me, It's not my family In your head, in your head they are fighting With their tanks and their bombs And their bombs and their guns In your head In your head they are cryin' In your head Zombie What's in your head, in your head Zombie
Another mother's breakin' Heart is taking over When the violence causes silence We must be mistaken It's the same old theme since 1916 In your head, In your head they're still fightin' With their tanks In your head they are dyin'
In your head, in your head Zombie What's in your head, in your head Zombie

When my daughter was on leave from Afghanistan, we went to the beach for a weekend. We were taking care of her son during her year. Rented this cool little cabin with a fireplace and all that. She started talking about what was happening. To this day I recall very little of what she was actually saying because I was overcome with horror. I remember pieces, the handsome soldier who lost his face to a landmine. Describing "minedogs" special trained civilians mostly from Africa who sweep for mines. How when she volunteered for checkpoint duty, the women couldn't believe she was a soldier and would actually feel her breasts to reassure themselves before they themsleves were searched. How the soldiers carried the caskets of their Dead in memorials on a regular basis. In Afghanistan. I told we didn't hear about those deaths as much-- she just said "I know". Thank God she's home safe and sound. But during that time of loss and grief I swear that song rang through my head on a regular basis. One of the most horrible experiences of my life was taking that little boy back home when his mother had to return to what she described as purgatory.
