Even though Tiger barely made the cut, he still amazes me.
Under extreme pressure on 18 (he has to make birdie to make cut) he freakin' BOMBS one 350+ with his erratic driver. He's insane.

1. I wonder what causes his inconsistency?
Is he stressed over domestic problems we aren't hearing about, or does he constantly have to keep tweaking his play mechanics for some reason? When he's on he's ON, and when he slumps it's not just a little bit, it's scary. Interesting to keep track of though, and he and EA put out one hell of a fun computer golf game. :)

2. I think it's ego.
He wants everyone to know that HE tweaked his swing and HE made Tiger Woods successful. But without a true swing coach, he can't make adjustments like he used to. I think that had he stayed with Butch Harmon, he would already have 3 more majors than he does right now.

3. You know, I forgot all about that little fiasco.
I knew a while back there was some discussion that Tiger dropped his coach, but I never stopped to think that decision could be his problem. And yes, you're probably right. He can't objectively see the difference in his performance over time the way someone else can.

4. I read that he's retooling his swing
and that might be a logical explanation.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

In 2000, Tiger Woods' swing was considered close to perfection.

It brought him a haul of seven major titles out of 11 in a golden period from 1999-2002.

And yet by the end of 2002, Woods had decided to change his swing, a decision that left him without a major win in two years.

Fast forward to 2005 and the decision appears to have paid off - Woods' Masters and Open triumphs this year have come with a different coach and a brand new swing.

But why did Tiger Woods decide to deconstruct his golf swing in the first place? And is it really better than his old one?

------------

My question is he switching to a "single axis" swing? I don't watch tv -- so I'm asking those who love golf and would know the answer to the puzzle.

5. It was fun watching him sweat it! He was MAD! But he pulled it
out. Should make for a good rally today. Gonna' be 99 degrees in jersey where they're playing.
