I took a train to visit a relative when I was 13.(now I'm 54!) I've gone by train across Canada and the U.S. when I was in my twenties. The mood on longer distance daytime train trips is fun- you can walk around and meet people and talk. You can talk to other kids about where they are from as they board along the way. I don't know what the Amtak schedule is up the east coast-but if it's say, from early a.m. to evening it could be cool.
