1. No
I just flew from Omaha to San Diego. You must have a picture ID to check in at the airport.

3. Don't panic
Call the airport and explain your situation. I'm sure you're not the first person with this problem.

4. I can't even find my school ID
I'll call the airport in Albany which I'm sure won't be a problem, but I'm not sure BWI will be as lenient.

15. Some airports are stricter
I was surprised ast the difference between Phoenix and Seattle. In Phoenix, I didn't need a boarding pass to get to the gate, in Seattle I couldn't even go through security without one.

who got on with nothing at all, they weren't even on the passenger lists!

7. Go to the DMV on Monday
And get a non-driver's license ID...it works. It's a pain, it solves your probelm simply.

9. Check the website first
To see what you need...I'm sure it's the same as you needed for the learners - birth certificate, and something else.

10. They should be able to do it in one day.
Albany airport will be as strict as BWI or anywhere. It is the federal Transportation Safety Administration that mandates photo IDs. It is a repeated part of the check-in and security processes. You have no way around it. But, try searching again for your learner's permit and student ID.

I am just so bummed out, I hope that it works. I've been looking forward to this trip for a long time. My mom called Albany and they said to bring my birth certificate and SS card, and that would be fine. I am also bringing every single card with my name on it that I have, including my library card, lol.

11. Yes, if it's like Illinois, you can walk in and get it done.
And do come prepared. Check the state's website.

I didn't get a driver's license until I was 34. I functioned happily with an Illinois state ID card until then.

13. You could try for an expedited passport
Look around online . . . there are several agencies that guarantee issuance of a passport in less than 24 hours. Tuesday morning might be cutting it close but you never know.

Good luck, Maggie, and I'm sorry to hear about the hassle. I hope it works out okay.

16. I'm not sure
I think if you are 16 or over you have to produce an ID. I know last time I took a flight (August) I had to produce my permit.

25. yes, it's possible
I observed a friend get on a plane with my own eyes without any ID. I guess if you have a plausible story and you're white, it's OK.

A couple of weeks ago I flew cross country without anyone checking my ID, which I thought was a bit weird. But coming back they checked it again.

What I would do in your shoes is call the airline and find out what I needed -- such as a police report where I have reported the lost or possibly stolen Driver's License, Passport, whatever. You have to realize that people get their pockets picked all the time and they still manage to get where they're going. But it may be a hassle. Go ahead and call the airline and see if they can tell you what documentation you may need. And get to the airport EARLY because they may need to make an extra-careful search.

33. Yes you can
Don’t panic. I just flew across the country with a photocopy of my birth certificate and a credit card (and I’m a 22 year old swarthy looking fellow.) I lost my wallet the day before my flight and when I called the airport they just asked me to show up a good two hours before my flight so that they could give my luggage and myself a full check.

My advice is to call the airport.

36. Maggie -- did you check the NY DMV Web site?
http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/idlicense.htm

Every confusing thing you need to know about getting a non-driver photo ID is on this page.

Also, they might be able to issue another copy of your learner's permit.

Hang in there! :hi:

37. go to DMV and get an ID card. It will have your picture. I got one after
9/11 because I had to fly right after. Use it and a
library card. Library cards are the gold standard for
another ID, even without a picture. Also, have several
other cards with your name on them handy also.
