What Radio Station Did You Listen To When You Were Growing Up?
Edited on Sun Aug-14-05 02:48 PM by cryingshame
New York had WNEW 102.7FM back in the 60's-70's-80's.

Progressive Rock. It was pretty Independant then.

It had excellent DJ's and I pity youngsters today who might not have such mainstream access to good music.

Scott Muni
Alison Steele (Nightbird)- she pioneered New Age way before it even was called "New Age". Beautiful voice and spirit.
Pete Fornatale
Dennis Elsas- has done and still does outstanding interviews
Vin Selsa- Idiot's Delight.. really eclectic mix.

WNEW died a long death and I haven't even bothered to check what's there now.

But Fornatale, Elsas and Selsa all are on WFUV, Fordham University's radio station.

Now I pretty much only listen to College Radio on the Left side of the dial.

Kind of curious to see how DJ's got along with the advent of Clear Channel and canned radio.

9. What A Great Bio! Just Read It On Wiki. He Refused To Use Playlist
Jim Ladd (born January 17, 1948), an American disc jockey, radio producer and writer, is the last remaining freeform rock DJ in United States commercial radio.

Unlike his contemporaries, Ladd personally selects every song he plays. He combines music with atmospheric sound samples and social commentary, often inviting listeners to participate on the air. Most of his music sets center around a theme or storyline, such as Wild West outlaws, beautiful women or fast cars. He often adds appropriate listener requests to his themed sets; sometimes a request will inspire an entire set. His repertoire combines classic rock standards by artists like the Beatles, the Doors and Led Zeppelin with songs and artists not normally heard on commercial radio. As was once standard in radio, most of his broadcasts end with a long song, such as the Doors' "When The Music's Over," Neil Young's "Cowgirl In The Sand" or even Pink Floyd's 23-minute-long "Echoes."

Ladd served as an inspiration for the 2002 Tom Petty album The Last DJ and its title track. In his career, he has become friends with many rock legends such as Petty, John Lennon, and Jackson Browne, along with original MTV veejay J. J. Jackson and filmmaker Cameron Crowe. (He played an all-night DJ in Crowe's 1989 film Say Anything.) Ladd appeared on Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters' fourth solo album Radio K.A.O.S. as "DJ Jim," joined Waters on the tour that followed, and appeared in the three music videos for the album.

Ladd began his career in 1967 at KNAC, a small Long Beach rock station. After two years there, he moved to Los Angeles station KLOS. In 1974, he moved to KMET, or "The Mighty Met," where he would remain for most of the 1970s and 1980s save for brief stints on syndication and on KLOS. He finally left KMET in 1987, when it phased out on-air disc jockeys and switched to a smooth jazz format. For several years, he did not work as a DJ because he refused to follow a playlist, as most station owners demanded. He currently plays free-form rock music on KLOS weeknights from 10 p. m. to 2 a.m. His show routinely leads its timeslot in Arbitron ratings.

Ladd's daily radio show is available only in the Los Angeles area because it is not syndicated and KLOS's audio stream is not available on the Internet as of 2005. However, he has produced, written and narrated a number of nationally syndicated programs, including interviews, concert specials and album premieres. National audiences probably know him best as the host of Innerview, an hour-long interview program that aired in the 1970s and 1980s.

Ladd received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star at 7018 Hollywood Boulevard on May 6, 2005.

Maurice Woods, the owner of Wedgewood. Every Christmas he would have either a kiddie ride or an elaborate Santa display. Our street was made into a one-way, police controlled area due to the high volume of traffic.

I loved going to Wedgewood Village....ooooooh...Riding the Tornado and the Hammer were my favs!

43. They were the only two R&R stations in Philadelphia. WIBG-FM
was really good for a couple of years, with the cutting-edge rock and psychedelia and all that. Oddly enough, the FM studio was off Fairmount Ave in the city, and the AM studio was in the suburbs (Whitemarsh, off Ridge Pike).

13. krla, kmet/klos, kroq
roughly from middle school to high school then college

KRLA tried to emulate the free-format "underground" FM stations of the time. Jimmy Rabbit was my favorite DJ then. Played lots of neat psychedelic garage bands.

KMET and KLOS were bastions of early and mid 70's progressive rock

Then this pipsqueak of a station in Pasadena started playing real interesting stuff in the late 70's (KROQ)

Yes - feel free to make rude comments. It's the B.B.C. speech network - I get the impression rather similar to N.P.R. in the U.S.

This was mostly for mornings as I got up - then when I was about 16 there was a strike which shut down the Today Programme (the flag-ship news-commentary morning show) and so I tried Radio 3 (classical music, plus a dash of jazz and world-music at times) and have never looked back since.

My mother tuned in to John A. Gambling almost religiously each morning. I can still hear in my mind the news broadcast that ran on the program the day after JFK was shot.

For those of you who want to hear the voice one more time, here's a link with audio:

When we lived in Ohio, I used to listen to WING and stations of that sort. LOTS of '70s pop, plus some classic rock.

37. I don't really remember
but I know one of them was WRKO, which, if memory serves me, turned into a talk radio channel. Boston had a lot of pop channels through the 60s and 70s, but I watched TV more than listened to the radio.

Although there was that summer in '67 when I was in Cape Breton, missing the Monkees (alright, I was 11, okay?) and my grandmother only had a radio which I could listen to on Sundays only. I tried to keep up on the pop songs while I was there. I used to spend more time at the neighbor's watching The Saint, because it was the only thing on.

the main stations we listened to was KXOK AM 630 Top 40 and KWK AM 1380 Soul Radio and KATZ AM 1600 Soul as well. Then FM discovered rock, or the other way around...

Up to about 1974 K-SHE was THE rock station. Then they sold-out. Pig motherfuckers...

At that time there was also KDNA FM which was all weird and underground.. 20 minutes of dead air and stuff like that... after 10 years or so of absence it's back as KDHX 88.1 FM Community Radio and plays any/everything.

oh- this is St. Louis, MO i'm talkin' 'bout!

49. CKLW - Windsor/Detroit in the 70's
Classic, classic, classic radio. Balls to the wall music, news and everything in between.
This is the station where I heard everything that would eventually become "classic rock".
On top of that, this was a time in history when Detroit was known as one of the most violent cities in America.
When they used to do the news, I remember the news jocks would have sounds of gunfire, squealing tires and the like in the background. When it was that bad, the only thing left was to make fun of it!

The Classic CKLW Page!

50. KSTP Minneapolis, KOMA Oklahoma city. Could hear both quite
clearly in Havre, MT in the evening on my brother's Panasonic ball-shaped AM radio. This was the early seventies. They played a lot of pop hits and seemed to connect us to the outside world that we left when we moved back to Montana.

54. WAAF out of Springfield Mass. (I think)
Good station back in the 70's - played "album rock" rather than the cauterized versions that so many stations played. They used to play an entire new album on (I think) friday nights which was a great way to hear new music. Had some fun morning DJ's.

Also listened to WAQY - can't remember where that was but I think maybe Worcester, Mass? It was okay but more top 40 oriented and always had dorky and trendy promos and stuff. WAAF was a music lover's station.

64. KPRI in San Diego. In addition to Rock, it had a 5 minute morning soap
about Sammy Surfer and his girlfriend Joanna Anna.

Another dead San Diego station (and this goes way back so it is AM): Magic 91. A dream station for a pre-teen in love with disco and other top 40 hits of the late 70s and early 80s.

77. A big kick here...
:kick:

I'm only 24, so the stations I listened to were of more recent vintage. I can honestly say I started paying attention to music when I was around 13 years old. My parents would have on the aforementioned 102.7 WNEW (in the mid-early 90s, it started getting more alternative, much to the consternation of my parents), 92.3 K-Rock when it was still a classic rock station, and 101.1 WCBS-FM, which just went through a controversial format change to the Jack-FM format back in June. On the bus to and from school, the bus driver played 95.5 WPLJ, and they played a mix of the 70s, 80s, and 90s (they dropped the 70s for quite a while, but brought them back into their playlist recently). I think these radio stations directly influenced my taste of music, as I don't have much taste for any post 90s music.

AM rock n roll radio. That's all we had back then on our crackly transistor radios. The DJs were loud and corny, the reception faded if you turned your radio the wrong way, and we liked it! We loved it! {/grumpy old man}

Then the "underground" FM radio stations started up and there was one really good one. I can't remember the call letters but I know The Magistrate remembers - WSDM, maybe? They played whole albums without breaks.

WXRT 93.1 was the best in the 70s and 80s.

The Northwestern University station plays some interesting music when they're not broadcasting sports.
