Fire ants infesting my corn!

I picked a couple of ears of Silver Queen and hundreds of fire ants streamed out and bit me on the hands. Bitch! I called my entomologist dad, but he is at a loss on this one. Some ears were not infested, some were. Go figure.

1. I hate the little devils...

When I was a grad student they got into the power solenoid in my air conditioner. Their little squashed bodies prevented electrical contact. Always seemed like on one of those 100 degree 100 percent humidity days, too.

2. They are very aggressive. My hands are in bad shape.

I slathered Tiger Balm on for some relief. I was picking vegetables and dropping them in my cooking apron. Glad I didn't drop that fire ant infested corn down near the zipper line! I can't even imagine that!

4. I was in Atlanta last night for dad's 85th birthday party. It was great!

I took Sirius and Nick-Nick. Sirius did great! I'll try to download a pic and post it.

BTW: Other critters in the yard. I almost stepped on a copperhead mowing this afternoon.

5. My loathing of fire ants..

... knows no bounds :)

The season is coming up - in Oct the queen takes flight and they land all over the place and create new mounds.

And the wife and I dutifully get out the Amdro and laboriously treat each mound in the area of our house :)
