Monks at a Belgian abbey have run out of their famous beer after it was voted the best in the world.

The abbey of Saint Sixtus of Westvleteren in western Belgium is home to about 30 Cistercian and Trappist monks who lead a life of seclusion, prayer, manual labour and beer-brewing.

A survey of thousands of beer enthusiasts from 65 countries on the RateBeer website in June rated the Westvleteren 12 beer as the world's best.

But the abbey only has a limited brewing capacity and was not able to cope with the beer's sudden popularity.

"Our shop is closed because all our beer has been sold out," said a message on the abbey's answering machine, which it calls the "beer phone".

1. NOOOO!!!!
The Chimays (Red, Blue, White) are fabulous beers! They CAN'T run out!!!!

The Trappist brewing tradition dates back to the middle ages, when the brothers would brew beer for their own use (remember, this is back when the water was usually unsafe to drink, so you had to drink wine or beer).

They also make very good cheeses, too.

2. I drank most of it.
We just got a Belgian style brew pub in Indy. I was told that french fries were invented in Belgium. I don't know if that is true, but all the tables at the brew pub have holes in them for holding paper cones full of french fries. They serve all kinds of funky dipping sauces. I guess they like mayo based sauces in Belgium for fries. MMmmmm deep fried potatoes dipped in fat.

5. Trappist Monks DO In Fact Make the Best Friggin' Beer on the Planet
Edited on Tue Aug-16-05 09:58 AM by Beetwasher
No doubt. I've never had this particular one, but Chimay is brewed by some Trappist's too and that is some crazy ass amazing shit.

I don't know what it is about these guys, but they know how to brew some fine beer.
