Would you drive slower to save on gasoline?
Motorists can help themselves by slowing down on the highway. For each five miles an hour over 60, it's like paying an additional 15 cents a gallon for gasoline.

1. I can RARELY drive over 65 in L.A. ... more likely I'm going 40!
But I have remembered Jimmy Carter's recommendation back in the '70s and have done so CONSCIOUSLY since gas hit $2.75 a gallon here ...

2. Not only slower, but also less. My car uses little gas at 0 mph.

5. Sure. Just move the Twin Cities, say, 60 miles NW
The reality of life way out here on the plains is, we're going to drive 70-75 whether you want us to or now.

What we really need is high spread inter-city train service, but we all know that's not going to happen in our lifetime.

7. Isn't that the truth.
And your profile shows that you live in the only spot in ND with any traffic at all. lol

12. Now, that's not true
I once had to wait at a light through two cycles in Grand Forks.

I grew in in N'wawlins, one of the most congrested places on earth (if your dumb enough to get on I-10 at rush hour or cross the only single-span GNO Bridge), and lived in the DC area for almost a decade.

People here *think* they have traffic, like they *think* they have bad neighborhoods. But I can get from end to end of town in about 25 minutes at rush hour (the long way).

19. Oh I know.
There isn't an area in NOrth Dakota with "traffic", but Fargo is as close as you get. In North Dakota, a 25 minute commute is REALLY LONG. LOL.

8. My Prius already trained me to do so.
Its computer transformed me from a left-lane road warrior to a right-lane ascetic. It really does make the difference between 49 and 57 mpg.

10. I have been doing that
it seems to have worked, though with the blistering heat & overwhelming humidity of this past Saturday, I had to crank up the A/C for our 3 hours in the car (90 minutes each way to post Ridgefield, CT)

14. Depends on your cars gearing.
6th gear on my car lugs the engine below 60. After filling up on a recent highway trip I was watching the inidicator for how many miles I could travel on the gas available. I found that at 70 it gave me the most MPG.

55 with the cruise control on the two-lane going to work. People hate me for doing it. I have a rant on this very subject on my website (see link below). Jimmy Carter was right in 1979 (even though people cussed about it), and he's still right today.

So it's driving the speed limit, sweaters in the winter, open windows in the summer (unless it's really fucking hot), and the whole bit.

16. I have slowed down somewhat.
Though I try to keep up with the approximate flow of the traffic. If you're driving too slow (10-15 below the flow of traffic), it can be dangerous, especially when people will almost run you off the road.
