What's your favorite breed of dog?
And why? My daughter asked me this question today. I just love our Golden Retriever. He loves life so much, is so obedient, yet has a bit of a "bad boy" side. He is just one wonderful dog!

We had one...and he was so lovable. They're just a great breed of dog. Good for families, also.

130. My favorite, too! I had a roommate who had a Basset hound...
he kind of "became mine." I told my wife I never, ever heard him growl for any reason. He didn't have a mean bone in his body.

I also love Border Collies...we just had to put our 12 year old Border Collie to sleep. He was so smart and learned so quickly. Not a good family dog, though.

I have had three (and a fourth who is cocker/golden with something else, maybe Sheltie) and they look like tiny fluffy goldens who are small enough to cuddle.

131. We just put our Border Collie to sleep...I miss him so much.
He was so, so smart and such a great dog...

I read a story once about a guy that had a Border Collie. He ordered a pizza and was sitting on the couch eating a slice. His Border Collie was sitting there watching him and the guy said, "Oh no...you aren't getting this pizza." He looked over a few minutes later and the dog was staring at the pizza box on the table. The guy said, "You're not getting that pizza, either." and he got up and moved the box into the kitchen.

When he came back to his pizza, the slice he had been eating was gone. It is almost as if his Border Collie tricked him!

One of my goals in life is to live a life where I can have a dog (I travel too much right now). I want a long-haired mini - they seem a bit calmer than the smooths I grew up with, but have the same sweet heart.

Misty, my late Border Collie, RULED her pack with an "iron paw"

I loved her and still miss her 1-1/2 years later....

Here's Misty on her throne

58. Ours came from a shelter too
She was "dumped" on the highway near the place where I worked and the folks in the arehouse were afraid she would ge hit by a train or semi so they called the pound to pick her up.

I had been feeding her my lunches so after the seven-day waiting period was up I went to the pound and got her....for my son...right?

Misty was always my constant companion. I was her favorite "servant" and the one she alway wanted to lick when we came home at night. She was a great foot-warmer on winter nights.

Sometimes, "pound-puppies" make the best pets....

46. Cute!
She does have the look of a bichon. I had a Bichon when I was a kid, she was actually one of the larger variety--you never know when you're going to get a tiny Bichon or one of the long torsoed ones. Funny dog..she used to chew on her legs (allergies) and lick herself and everywhere that her saliva had touched would turn orange. She could get homely as hell, but she was a very loveable dog nonetheless. :)

I had no experience with this breed until one showed up at my door 3 years ago. I had had Great Danes so size was no problem. Many people would be put off by the amount of slobber. I'm not a real pparticular person about housekeeping ( Had an orphan foal in the house for 2 months). This big boy just stole my heart. He died in April. I have a puppy now but she has such severe heart problems that the U of Wis. vet school doesn't expect her to live beyond 9 months. If any one as contacts out there about a breeder or rescue person , please pm me.

29. Boxers!
Edited on Tue Aug-16-05 06:01 PM by skygazer
I love dogs and can find something to love about most of them but Boxers are truly wonderful dogs. They're smart, have a sense of humor, are very adaptable and are excellent with kids. They are protective but will almost never bite - mostly what they do is get between you and what they perceive as danger and look intimidating, which is easy for them.

My Dixie was the smartest dog I ever had. She understood my most nuanced look. She went everywhere with me, even to work when I worked construction. She learned from living on a farm what a back up signal meant and so when she heard it, she would watch out for backing vehicles. She rode snowmobiles with me, sitting in front of me and leaning on the turns! She understood hand signals and when I was sick would climb into bed with me and snuggle for hours.

I miss her so much.

43. Basenji

Basenjis do not bark, but they do make noise, and a Basenji left alone can make quite a racket. One owner, a policeman, was surprised to find his house surrounded as he returned from a quick trip to the store. A neighbor, convinced that the noise he was hearing was a baby crying, had called the police. The breed's characteristic yodel or chortle can often sound like human laughter or crying.

The Basenjis fastidious nature and dainty habits have made them popular. They clean themselves all over, spending hours grooming themselves just like a cat. (They also sit on the back of furniture and gaze out the window.)

44. Want a nanny, bodyguard, and maid? German Shepherd.
They get a bad rep as "police dogs".
Sometimes they're called "German Police Dogs".
"Is that a ploice dog?"
No, it's a shepherd. Like Jesus."

I've watched Gypsy herd a back yard birthday party of five year olds.
Circling, always circling...then darting out to round up a stray and bring 'em back into the herd. And the kids never knew it.

I saw gentle Studs grab a guy by the seat of the pants, sit down on his haunches, and just dig in and stop him. Never even broke the skin.
The guy had just tried to pry our front bedroom window open with a crowbar.

And maid? I guarantee we never had to clean up spilled food from the floor.

126. I met a champion
soft coated wheaten at a dog show in Tallahassee. It sounds sort of crass, but we wanted to get a dog but were waiting for our backyard fence to be built and were kind of "window shopping" for a breed. Our first choice (which we got) was the standard poodle, second was the schnauzer. But that soft coated wheaten was really nice.

poodles have a really undeserved reputation, in my opinion. there's no need for them to have prissy haircuts, and they are incredibly intelligent animals.

Bringing up thunderstorms is funny. Unlike most dogs I know, he wasn't bothered by them (or anything else, for that matter) in the least.

72. Gotta love the Boxer
I've had seven over the years and each was a sweetheart. Once when my kids were little threy and a couple of neighbor boys talking about about their dad's dog. One neighbor kid had a Lab who lived in a kennel full-time and was 'for Hunting", the other had a Geman shepherd that was Strickly "for protection", the kid said his dad told him not to spoil the dog by petting it. My son asked, "Dad, what's Oscar for?" (Oscar was our Boxer at the time) My daughter didn't miss a beat, "he's just for loving!" She was right.

They have short, easy to maintain coats, very even temperments and a natural affinity for children and smaller dogs.

She barks A LOT! And it's this high pitched ACD scream that is really annoying. Our old boy Petey, though, is the typical ACD in that he only barks when he thinks it's necessary.

Here's my post from above with pics of my two ACDs and my parents' ACD mix:

:-). He barks a lot and is the first one to howl with the fire/police sirens.

Also, he has started to get a little vocal. By this I mean, he is "talking" to us! We had a lab/shepherd mix years ago that did this, too.

Sometimes when I ask her a question you can almost make out words! No kidding!

109. It was scary with our Lab/shepherd mix Smokey
Our vet at the time recommended we clip his vocal cords! Smokey thought he was a person - he was our only pet and he would sit there, look us right in the eye and start talking.

I raised him using the book "How to be your dog's best friend". He was so smart. Played frisbee like a champ, could differentiate all of his many squeak toys, learned to unlock the sliding patio door and open it, etc.

He died too young at age 7 in 1987. We will never forget him.

Side note:
I've noticed that, with far fewer loose dogs than there were years ago, along with diligence in spaying and neutering, most mutts now are mixes of just a few pure bred dogs. In the old days a lot of mutts were many generations removed from most of their listed breed heritage. I don't see as many "yellow dog" or really wild looking mutts as I did when I was a kid, except in Mexico, where the mutts still look like the mutts of old.
