"I'm gonna tell you right off the bat this movie's in a foreign language,"
snarled the video clerk with hand raised in testimony as I approached with a copy of Jeunet's "A Very Long Engagement" ... as if I had perhaps recently strangled a 4 week old puppy after placing its 3 day old feces on the hood of her car.

"I know," I smiled.

Gotta love Amerika. :D

2. Probably had recently dealt with a nasty customer
who ranted about renting the movie only to discover all the characters spoke some "fer-ah-newer" talk and had trouble reading the subtitles with them fancy words.

There are subtitles, sir.

"Hell-far! Ah don' wanna READ a MOVIE. You READ a BOOK, not a MOVIE. You WATCH a MOVIE."

11. Many in my family hate subtitles, and feel they're being cheated

on a movie if they have to read along. THey don't care that overdubbing never catches the true sense of the tone or mood of a scene; or that it interferes with the flow of action sometimes. Nope, gotta have the ENTERTAINMENT served up on a plate for them.

Along with a good percentage of Amerikuns, who are too fucking stupid to be left alone, let alone breed. They don't get the idea that sometimes we watch movies because they're ART. But, let's face it - the majority of America thinks Top Gun and Independance Day are really fucking good movies.

Same goddamn thing with the fullscreeners, who insist on having the movie fullscreen, because otherwise "we're losing like a third of the movie that's been chopped off" as they complain about widescreen.

Took me YEARS to convince my brother-in-law that widescreen actually gives the WHOLE picture.

He still won't buy widescreen, though - I think he secretly has never admitted that widescreen has the full picture, even though he ACTED like he finally understood it that one day when I explained it for the 30th fucking time.

AMERICANS ARE JUST TOO GODDAMN DUMB.

13. LOL, I agree about the original language and Widescreen format.
When I wanted to rent 'Das Boot' (pre-dvd days), it was only available in my town in English (to rent), so I purchased my own copy in the original German.

I will say this about English translation - you don't have to keep rewinding during the action sequences to catch the dialogue you missed. But, even that was better then the non-synchronized alien speak of an English dubbed copy.

All the foreign film I have is subtitled; I refuse to watch a dubbed film, on general principles. And the pan-and-scan fullscreen movies suck, too; maybe the shift to HDTV and 16: 9 ratio will finally cause people to realise that widescreen is far superior.

18. Yep
The "read a movie" line is used on me a lot because of my love of subtitled anime.

He said Jody Foster did not one but two nude love scenes in it.
