Wedding drama! What could be more fun?
Provided, of course, that it's someone else's wedding!

My Republican brother, who I love despite all the crazy political arguments we have, finally got engaged a couple weeks ago. I am happy for him, as he is pushing 40 and it's about time. Due to an infelicitous combination of circumstances, viz. my being a lesbian and my brother and sister being perennially single, this will be the first opportunity my mother has had to see one of her children get married, and I can just feel her maneuvering the big guns into position.

The first shot fired was her suggested list of people to invite to the wedding, which was 80 names long (not including members of the immediate family). Now, of course, since this is all being done by Big Book of Patriarchy rules, this wedding is really not my mother's show; the bride's family is in charge, and the bride's family has allotted 50 spots for groom's-family-and-groom's-parents'-friends. So now, the dealing begins.

I asked my dad if maybe I should send my brother a list of people *I* want to invite to the wedding, beginning with the entire membership of DU...but somehow he didn't feel that would be helpful.

And to think, this is just the beginning! There's a whole year of this soap opera to look forward to. I'm gonna go lay in a year's supply of popcorn.

mmm...

2. A successful wedding is the test of ones negotiation skills
I'm secretly hoping my daughter decides to elope when/if the time comes.
