Church was eminently refreshing tonight.
Real pastor. Real music. With real instruments. With real people singing (and also covering my wilted, off-key voice! :D). Loved it all.

No electronic mish-mash, no vocal-enhancers, zilch. That is what society is meant to be: Communal togetherness. (even if there is a religious slant to it, which I rather liked too. And even if I am shy and scared of people by default. It at least felt welcoming by comparison to other outlets.)

1. Cool! What kind of church was it?
I'm glad you had such a great experience.

Music should only be performed live. I fucking hate weddings and church services and funerals that used canned music; even if it's canned music with a live singer singing over it.

It's just crap, it's tacky, and it's disrespectful to the worshiping community, in my opinion.

Not that there aren't times it CAN be appropriate, such as a service about requiems ("here, let me play some sections from many different composers so you can hear the artistic variations") or "here's my personal testimony, and this song by so and so really moves me, here, listen to it" or etc.

But generally, if someone is singing to a canned accompaniment, it's because they suck, and can't find anyone willing to accompany them to begin with OR they're too goddamned stupid to sing with a live human being, because they can't "perform" unless there is a perfectly synchronized metronimic by-the-book accompaniment sitting under them.

:puke:

Anyway, sorry to add so much negativity to such a positive thread! I am seriously and wondrously glad that you had a welcoming experience. I hope it was a moving and meaningful experience as well!!

2. Also, one could make a pun and say "immanently refreshing"

Sorry, theological joke.

5. No coffee hour? So, it wasn't a congregational or Lutheran church then.
