What makes you feel old?
Me:

My eldest nephew will soon be 21 years old. My niece will soon be 18 years old.

Arthritis & degenerating vertebrae.

People born when I was an adult have been adults themselves for six years already, and counting.

Many DUers don't know who Mark Fydrich is, nor do they know who/what several other time capsule-type items are/were.

Sigh.

What makes you feel old?

17. Knowing who Mark "The Bird" Fydrich is!
Edited on Fri Aug-19-05 10:18 AM by NewJeffCT
Remembering that I was in junior high school when I raced home from school to catch the Yankee-Red Sox playoff game in 1978, and 1978 was 27 years ago.

Remembering that was also the year that Van Halen put out their first album!

Feeling tired all the time...lack of exercise makes me feel old.

Thinking back to just 5-6 years ago when I was going through a divorce - I was working 2 jobs, kept my house neat, found time to start a new hobby (painting miniature wargaming figurines), and was also dating 4-5 women a week - and wondering how did I ever do that?

edited to add: and, when I realize that I haven't bought a CD of new music since 1999 and knowing nothing of the trendy music of today

or knowing what the fashions of the day for men are (though, I admit to noticing that low cut tops in women seem to be much more common these days, as are dark bras under light blouses/tops)

Edited on Fri Aug-19-05 10:27 AM by Strawman
He's the first baseball player I remember noticing as a little kid. He came to my junior high in 1986. One of our teachers had a bird in her class. "Bird meets The Bird" kind of thing.

This year is the 20th anniversary of my graduation from Catholic grade school. That makes me feel old.

Do you remember the Pittsburgh Pirates winning the 79 world series against the O's? (also the 71 world series)

Grew up in ohio, but i hated the reds (primarily because i could not stand pete rose), so i went with the pirates, who always seemed to play the reds in the playoff during the 70's. Also my dad is a pirates fan who loved to tell me about watching bill mazeroski hit a grand slam against the yankees to win the 1960 world series.

Knowing that when they're older, there's a good chance that they'll look back on times when they said such STUPID things to their "elders," and they'll think, "What an asshole I was." Or better yet, that they'll age badly and not understand why. Karma, baby, karma.

That and hearing the samples from different older songs (e.g., "Jack and Diane") incorporated into other songs.

I also despise what they've done with promoting TV programs (i.e., cramming as many images onto the screen as possible, including right in the middle of a program). Good-bye, movie credits (except in a few channels), good-bye attention span, good-bye sanity. Where is the person who came up with this idea, and when will he (I suspect it's a he) face public execution?

61. The sensation that time itself is accelerating.
Once, a year seemed like a long time. Now, a year goes by in a few blinks. There is a relativity that accounts for this: When you're ten, a year is one-tenth of your entire life; when you're 50, well...

Time speeds up as you age. It seems like the winter holidays are followed by summer, which gives way to Thanksgiving. It all becomes a blur.

My biggest fear is that time will speed up so much, that I'll actually feel a wind against my face! :scared:

79. I feel old when I consider the year I was born...
But I don't look my age, or act it, or anything....

I kind of feel "suspended"...

I wonder how I'll look and feel in 10 more years...:scared:

80. The fact that I have an adult daughter.
1980s nostalgia, particularly when indulged in by people who were in diapers when I graduated from high school.

Any number of once common popular culture references that mean nothing to the young whippersnappers.

84. i'm old
when my daughter likes a guy who's 34 years old, and I realize I'm old enough to be his mother. Yikes. Being a grandma has made me feel young though.

85. Playboy Playmates
Edited on Fri Aug-19-05 11:14 PM by zigster
When I was a kid, their birthdates ranged from the 1940s to the 1950s (they seemed old to me). Then the 1960s. Then the 1970s. THEN the 1980s. Now I'm like: "Geez, she was born in 1986?????????" I was all GROWN UP then!

They're getting younger and I'm getting older.

Reminds me of the show Married with Children where Al Bundy tries to impress some secretary by claiming to be Joe Namath.

Al: "That was me. 1969 Superbowl, babe."
Secretary: "1969? Wow. I wasn't even born yet."
Al: (breaks down crying)
