5. Boodah
It is a long story, but our great black lab Buffett died on April 20, 2004. We were all heartbroken. We went looking for another dog and went to Petco to look at the kiosk of dogs for adoption and it was there where they had"the Boodah Buffet". We used to kid with Buffett when we saw the "all you can eat buffet" on our family vacations. We actually named our dog before we got him. HIs AKC name is Fenways Lucky Boodah. And yes we take credit for the World Series win by the Red Sox.

21. just re-read your original post, and realized I was so rude
don't know if your loss was recent, but sorry to learn of it.

the last dear canine friend I lost was Max, a flat coated retriever.

I knew it was time to end Max's pain, and told my vet so. But he loved Max so, and tried to convince me that we could give me a bit longer with drug therapy. Max was very old for a flat coat - about 13 years.

You see, the vet fell in love with Max when I adopted him from a shelter. Treated him for heartworms, treated him when he got hurt in an accident, and he told me himself that he and Max were "great friends.

Max, on his first visit to the vet after adoption, befriended an elderly gentleman who was broken-hearted after losing his pet. The gent was telling the vet staff that he'd never love another dog - too painful. Max was pulling on the leash, and I had to fight him to get him still. But as our turn was called, he broke free. Ran to the gent and THREW his arms around the man's neck, and kissed him.

As I walked away, I heard the man tell the staff that he could love a dog LIKE THAT ONE.

Man, I loved that dog.

Oh, Max died peacefully in his sleep about 12 hours after his last trip home from the vet. I'll always believe he just couldn't bear to put me through the pain of euthanizing him. He wanted to die at home, and with me. The vet died about 2 months later. At least I know Max is among friends.

35. Currently,
I have three:

Pharaoh (7 years): Border Collie/German Shepherd
Corki (9 months): Black Lab/Border Collie
Melia (9 weeks): Black Lab/Collie

I got Corki in December shortly after I had to have Diablo (German Shepherd/Wolf hybrid) put down (liver failure). And I got Melia three weeks ago, shortly after I had to have Amigo (Border Collie/Collie) put down (kidney failure).

I sympathize with you on the loss of Snoopy. In fact, I think I can probably safely say anyone posting in this thread has felt the pain.

For myself, I find getting a puppy as soon as possible is necessary. It's not an attempt to replace your old friend as much as it is introducing a new friend into your life. The ache, the pain, and the loss are still there. But, a little puppy is so much work, you don't have time to dwell on your old friend.

For every aching and longing thought for Diablo and Amigo, there is a corresponding laugh at the antics of Corki and Melia who are simultaneously being completely ignored and fiercely guarded by Pharaoh. Corki and Melia aren't replacements for 'Migo 'n D'ablo. They couldn't be if they wanted too - their personalities are too different.

To be honest, Amigo and Diablo as puppies couldn't replace the adult Amigo and Diablo. The shared life experiences that made them such valued members of the family hadn't occurred yet. Instead, they were new friends to replace the outgoing Meinardt (Yellow Lab/Something) and Puppy (Border Collie/Something)....
