Apparently, girls are not supposed to go outside in winter (RANT)
Took our daughter (4 years old) shopping for fall/winter clothes at one of the local outlet malls today. One of the stores had no outerwear for either gender. The other store had these really nice parkas for boys, but nothing but flimsy fleece jackets for the girls. Now, I would have no qualms about buying one of the boy jackets for her, but she likes pink and purple... :grr:

1. Oh lord, I've been through that.
My daughter was a tomboy who loved pink. Second choice was always purple.

3. But why would the store have the boy jackets and not the girl ones
GRRRRR

It is late August in Minnesota for chrissakes...meaning we are about 6 weeks away from snow!

5. Actually my experience has been that most stores have way more
girls clothing than boys. I think you might have got there after a big sale, or the store got screwed on it's shipments.

7. I bookmarked this site a while ago.
They had some nice coats on there just a few weeks ago for girls. I might order from here this winter (though it is pricier on some products than I usually spend)

http://www.childrenssalon.co.uk/rain.html (sorry, I saved the raincoats part of the site-looking around)

9. Could not find any real winter jackets/coats on that site
It gets really cold here in the winter.

I probably should poke around a bit more...

18. There were some nice pea coats on there that had removable
liners so that they could be worn either in the fall or the winter. But that was a few weeks ago that I saw them.

10. Why would you assume that an outlet mall store would have

predictable stocking ?

Don't they get overstocks, slightly defected, last seasons, etc. rather than a balanced, predictable stocking ?

the outlet malls get the same merchandise as the retail stores.

11. I've noticed
over the years that outerwear for women are not as warm as for men. Guess they don't realize we actually go outside in the winter. I bought a super warm man's coat to wear when I am going to be outside for any length of time.

13. Because I am extremely tall - I have difficulty finding women's
outerwear, so I wear mens...I love my North Face ski parka (got it on clearance a few years ago for less than $50). It is the warmest jacket I have ever owned.

14. That was one of my pet peeves when
my girls were little. There were no warm jackets for girls where I live other than ski stores. All were much lighter weight than that sold for boys. I would carry around jackets and compare them. Same thing for boots. I live in California but it still gets somewhat cold. It's absurd.

Recently, I was told to buy shoes for myself that have a stiff body. My feet hurt and I need better shoes according to my doctor. I was wearing athletic shoes that I thought were good. I checked out EVERY shoe in three stores. None worked. I then looked in Men's section. Half the athletic shoes in the Men's section had support recommended by Doctors. I guess women are supposed to have sore feet. (I did buy my athletic shoes in the Men's but they don't fit as well as women's shoes.)

19. This pisses me off.
In 1976 I found a pair of chunky loafers that had a tongue that came almost up to my ankle(like men's loafers do). By 1984 all I could find were loafers that looked and felt like flats. WTF? 20 years later and most womens shoes still look and fit like 1950's shoes.

22. I don't understand it for young girls.
But women have all that blubber to keep us warm. Breasts, thighs, hips, a belly. Fat, fat, fat! :sarcasm:

I remember well as a teen the paper thin "winter" jackets I wore (one of them purple with pink trim, dontcha know). When I looked back at them years later, I couldn't believe I survived the winter, especially being a skinny teenager (in AK).

At the time I remember not wanting to obscure my shape with a heavier coat. Everything had to fit snug at the waist, like a ski jacket. Young women don't want to look like a walking marshmallow. It's not sexy. Now I don't really care, but I don't spend a lot of time outdoors so I don't need a heavy jacket anyway. They're certainly heavier than I wore back then, though.

23. Ever try L.L. Bean?
I've gotten their catalogues for years and they have great stuff, including for kids. I know that they're pricey, but their things are rated for the coldest temps and wear like iron. I get their sale catalogues, too, and they have some great deals, even on things that I would have paid full price for. I thought of them since I seem to remember that the kids' items offered a lot of pink and purple.:D

29. Great! I'm so glad that you liked my suggestion...
And I'm not kidding about the sales. They are really terrific. I used to get half of my wardrobe from there and I was also impressed with the kids' sales. Made me wish I had kids...:D

And that is cute. IMHO, they do better for kids than they do for adults...
