She writes books about the history of my town Manhattan Beach...She started out by self-publishing, but now she has a regular publisher.

The book series is by Images of America...nice paperbacks...The publishers are Arcadia...I don't know if you know them...I'd never heard of them till she connected with them...

50. My understanding of the history of 'Nighthawks' is that it's actually a

studio album, but he used the conceit of having a bunch of friends come down to the studio and be the audience, so it has the ambiance and sound of a live club date.

My other faves are probably "Heart of Saturday Night", "Foreign Affairs", "Small Change" and "Closing Time". It's really the ballads and the older stuff that works for me, with piano.

I've gotten some of the newer stuff as gifts but I just don't like the music as much. When I first heard this older stuff when I was a student it just grabbed me by the throat. I was introduced to it by an old alcoholic Navy chief petty officer I was rooming with. I hope that guy's okay. A lot of the songs like "Piano has been Drinking" had a lot of resonance with that guy's life.

He wanted to replicate a smoky diner/lounge in the studio, and got a live crowd there to create the atmosphere of one.

I love "Closing Time"; it's one of the best debut albums ever made. The title song just kills me; always leaves me w/ a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat..

here on the shoreline, we get Autumn about a month later than Vermont and New Hampshire. It's not as much a riot of color as up North, because we have more oak trees and fewer maples, though it's quite pretty.

I am, however, quite ready for those crisp, dry days of Autumn, whenever they get here.

It's still officially summer, but there's a change of light in the middle of August that always tells me that the hot days are over. Finally.

When does your fall really start? Mid-September? Early October? I can't believe I don't remember when fall started when I was a kid growing up not far from Texas. (I'm gettin' old.)

125. Every year is different. September can still be hot, but not has bad

but not like August. Fall is mostly warm days and cool nights. Then we have a short winter and the spring. Last Christmas we had a little snow on Christmas eve, not much, but it was nice.

We can go from 80 degrees to 30 degrees and back in just a few days,
except last winter was close to a winter, had to wear a jacket of some kind most days.

I love fall, October is my month. I was going to go to Washington on a bus to enjoy the changing of leaves, but I am coming home on the bus so that will have to do. I just don't like to fly.

I am on pins and needles about the trip, any trip I plan so far ahead usually falls though. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
