see web pages were originally done very simply, on text editors.

but as websites got more complex, especailly with blogs and such, some content (words and pictures) got assigned URL's (links) by database and based on cookies, time of day, date... whatever.

That is why you have urls like this http://www.fakesite.com/349098s/dkdklsl000woojasghadsf;lsad/blah...blah.hmtl
when the old url was simple like...
http://www.fakesite.com/pages/blah...blah.html

does that make sense?

so now, in order to link to a particular page without having to go through the homepage and search, they have what are called permalinks

these are simply links that will not change and take you directly to that page, and that page only.

We changed the name because "permalink" seems to be the accepted name for this function in the blogosphere.

All it does is provide a direct link to the post. Click it -- it's totally safe.
