On a somewhat related note, I was at my friend's place one night and some of her roommate's friends showed up and one of them, without even introducing herself to me, looked at me and said, "you look like Sideshow Bob," and never said another word to me the whole night. I was caught off gaurd so much that I didn't even have a witty retort. I always have witty retorts in situations like that.

Normally I'd have made a few really mean insults, but it was just so surprised by it, haha. It was especially rude considering that my friends whose place it was are the girls who actually dreaded my hair for me. So they were both really proud of the dreads, and then the other roommate's friends show up and insult not only me, but them by extension.

have this impression of Switzerland as either A) cold, snowy, mountainous ski country, or B) green, rolling alps full of hill-dwellers. We think our Italian part is one of the world's best kept secrets. ;)

and four distinct cultures: German (Swiss-German), Romanche (the language is a mixture of Italian and Latin), French, and Italian. We live in the Italian part, five minutes from the Italian border and an hour from Milan. Our climate is very different than that on "the other side of the mountains" . . . more of a Mediterranean climate, lots of palmetto trees, magnolias, Camelia, and more grape vineyards than you can shake a stick at. ;)

The US is a wonderful country to live in, too, but I'd like to see our government celebrate diversity a little more, as I see nothing wrong with having more than one official language. :shrug: Here, it just encourages folks to speak more than one language. For example, my goddaughters, 11 and 13, speak Italian, Swiss-German, English and French.

But it's on the other side of the mountains, nearer Lucern, Aargau, etc. Some people have died in the flooding and mudslides. Lots of devastation. We here in the southern part are fine, though.
