Good quote explains freeps, fundies, Jesus Crispies, sports fucks, etc. |
|
This is great. I've not heard of this guy, but the quote came in the email for the AWAD (A Word A Day) mailing list. The word of the day today is also malversation. Kind of appropriate.
Here's the quote:
The less justified a man is in claiming excellence for his own self, the more ready he is to claim all excellence for his nation, his religion, his race or his holy cause. A man is likely to mind his own business when it is worth minding. When it is not, he takes his mind off his own meaningless affairs by minding other people's business. -Eric Hoffer, philosopher and author (1902-1983)
This also explains some of the sports fanatic behavior, extreme organizational loyalty, etc. This is what I've been thinking for a long time, but could never put it so perfectly terse. This is brilliant! Way to go, Eric Hoffer, whoever you are!

9. A "sports fuck" is the kind of guy who finds his self-worth |
|
through a sports team, or even an entire battery of sports teams. These are the guys who don't necessarily play sports, but can swill beer and beat their wives and mangle the English language in their barely-literate way while practically worshipping those who can play sports, and say assinine things like "My state is better, because our team won the super bowl" or "My high school is better because we beat you in basketball" or "My city is better because we've won more pennants than yours" etc.

3. This needs to be in GD |

Too good and relevant for the Lounge.
Is this from "True Believer"? I think I drove my better half nuts reading that book: Every 10 minutes, I was like "You have got to hear this . . . Isn't he dead on?"

I thought I was the only nerd who actually subscribed to the AWAD newsletter! It's filled with such great new words to add to our vocabulary. The average DUer probably knows a good 10,000 words more than the average poster on certain other websites we all know. ;)

10. A friend of mine came up with that term years ago, to mean |
|
the kind of Christian who isn't necessarily a Christian so much by action, but who TALKS about being a Christian, and the kind of Christian for whom Jesus is just their very best friend, and Jesus just won't let anything bad ever happen to a believer and I just love him so much and my hands are in the air just praising him because of all the love and excitement I just feel when I think of Jesus and I just love contemporary Christian music especially Sandy Patti her voice is just so appropriately smooth like a Christian's should be and her music is just so uplifting and every evening my church has activities for us so we don't have to be exposed to the non-Christian world of gays and demons and feminists who are just so awful, even though we love them as Christians, of course, and I have such a nice house and my husband/wife is such a good Christian who just loves Jesus and our children just love Jesus so much, too....
and on and on.
Anyone who uses "just" all the time is a good candidate for a Jesus Crispy.

11. "We just want to praise you Jesus, Our AWESOME God!" |
|
That's a direct quote from the preacher-in-charge of the Hands in the Air Church my family belonged to.
"We just wannna..." "We just wannna..." "We just wannna..." "We just wannna..."
I picture God eventually SCREAMING "WELL THEN 'JUST' GET THE FUCK ON WITH IT, WILL YOU?????"

and for me, it also applies to cops. Which is why I recently turned down an offer to be a pseudo cop, I just DON'T CARE what other people are up to, as long as it doesn't affect me. Arson, rape, murder and other things like that excepted of course, but they don't happen much on a dry campus.
