Real Player, now Windows Media Player keep popping up
on my friend's computer screen. Initially I thought the problem was with Real Player, so I uninstalled it. Now the same thing is happening with Windows Media Player. It pops up and goes to a web page. When it is minimized, it maximizes itself. This is happening every 30 seconds or so. Can't seem to find anything on this by searching the internet. Has anybody seen this issue before?

1. no but look in your start up and stop it from running when coming up
do this by clicking on

start
then click on run
type msconfig in the window

when the window pops up.....

look for the mswin media player program and unclick it.

reboot and see if you still have the problem

2. Sounds like it might be a spyware issue.
Run Spybot or AdAware. Something is trying to play audio content, and that's probably why it's popping up.

3. that Media Player keeps loading my msn browser too

and for some strange reason I can't load Netscape unless I load msn first.

so soon as the msn loads I load netscape and as soon as that loads I X msn away so the damn Media Player won't keep loading. grrrr

4. You and the OP's friend both have spyware infection.
It is a good idea to download, install, update AdAware and
Spybot then run them both from safe mode.

10. bring it up in safe mode and run spybot and ad adware
stinger is also another good one.

it's not getting rid of it because it is running on startup ( these programs dont remove infections if the programs are running while being cleaned up). thats why I had you go look at your msconfig file. something is running on startup that is causing this.

5. Here's my problem: I copied some cd's but instead of defaulting
to Windows Media Player, it's loading them into real player and I don't have real player and I'm not going to pay for it. I have successfully copied cd's in the past, though.

It also stopped reading the title/artist of a cd. Any cd I try to copy comes up "title and artist unknown."

8. Go to Control Panel, Folder Options, File Types
and change the CDA file type to use Windows Media Player

9. Even though when it asks me what I want to do, I click on
"copy to Windows Media Player?" Okay! I'll try it. Thanks :)

12. I think it's a settings problem. Ok, did you want the video or
whatever to play in IE instead of WMP?

13. Try this. Open IE - Tools - Internet Options.
Click on the Advanced tab. Scroll down to Multimedia:

and click Play sounds, animations and videos in Webpages and see if that works.
