6. It's a hardware security key.
Most companies have gone to software keys now but back in the day you would buy a license to run the software and the license would be encoded on a dongle -- a black box sort of thing, with a chip-- which you'd plug into a port on your computer.

9. All I know is it makes my co-workers crack up!
I work for a very big bank in California in the tech area. We have a system that require dongle's (and they are made in Israel so I guess they are "cut")and everytime we talk about them in meetings .... we giggle like a bunch of school kids.
