How do you like your Tofu?
I went out for a delicious Tofu dinner tonight with some friends, and I was struck how the three of us differed in our preference of Tofu doneness. I like mine pan-fried. What about you?

1. There are different types....
but I like the kind that's semi hard, stir fried with a spicy Chinese brown sauce with veggies, and rice of course. :)

2. Pan fried is good.
A lot of Korean places around here serve firm tofu raw in a sauce that's a mix of rice vinegar and soy sause. 'Tis pretty yummy that way too.

13. Thats the good thing about Tofu..........
Is that it takes the flavor of whatever you cook it with. My wife and I usually use a variety of soy sauce marinades.

27. In hot and sour soup....
I've finally been able to make really good hot-n-sour soup and it *must* have tofu. I can make it vegan, or with some meat/chicken broth. Either way everyone loves it.

Otherwise, one of the best ways I've had tofu is in "Happy Family Tofu". Deep fried triangles of tofu with a marvelous sauce that has a touch of hoisin (not too much) and bits of vegetables and "stuff". It was from a place called Panda Restaraunt (University Drive, Huntsville, late 80s- early 90s). I always ordered this dish "vegetarian" but I don't think it ever was; it was very very good. I've never been able to replicate it at home.

29. I love hot-n-sour soup......
My home made stuff has gotten pretty good. But there's a greasy-spoon-type chinese place near me that has the very best. Sometimes I swear it's mysterious toxic residue leftovers that make it so good. Damn it's good; I wish I had a big bowl right now, with those crispy fried noodle thingys. mmmmmmm.....

37. I have tried it pan fried and grilled
Yet I still don't like it. I've tried extra firm, firm, organic, regular, pre-flavored, flavored it myself, and I just don't like it.

I don't think I've ever tried harder to like a food than I have with tofu and I just can't find a way that makes it tasty for me. :(

54. I think that the best thing is to stop trying to recreate meat.
I've eaten Quorn (which I think is similar to Tofu  ). It was mince in a bolognese style sauce and worked fine - it was nothing like actual meat, but it tasted good.

If a person wants to avoid meat - then good for them (I do think that modern diets contain too much meat, personally); but why do you have to pretend that the non-meat being eaten is meat. There's plenty of gorgeous vegetable foods out there.

55. It's a little hard to say.
I gave up meat so long ago that a food that freaks me out for being "too realistic" might not fool you for a minute.

That said, I think Yves Deli Slices (mock balogna) and Lightlife "Hot dogs" are pretty fair healthy substitutes.

There's a Vietnamese restaurant across town from me that makes it that way and it's delicious. How spicy it is depends on who's in the kitchen--sometimes it's just kinda spicy, but other times, wow!
