A week ago I asked for DU help when I needed a poem for my father's impending passing.
Bill has passed on, and I'm just letting people know here. I received a copy of the poem, The Dash, and someone here from DU was quick to help me out.
My father was a veteran of 2 wars - WWII and Korea. He left us on Thursday nite, proud of his service and leaving me with a huge void in my life.
I appreciate the messages I received when I asked for help to find the peom for his eulogy, and I just ask that if you read this message, that you'll give a silent thanks, in your own way, for his service and love for this country.
Thanks to all of you who give a kind thought....I know I and my family will appreciate it.
Best to all,
abbeyco

I'm so sorry about your father's passing. And yes, I AM grateful to him and all like him, who have honorably served and protected our country.
I know that you will miss your father terribly, but he will live on in you and everyone else whose lives he was a part of.

Musee Des Beaux Arts
About suffering they were never wrong, The Old Masters: how well they understood Its human position; how it takes place While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along; How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting For the miraculous birth, there always must be Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating On a pond at the edge of the wood: They never forgot That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course Anyhow in a corner, some untidy spot Where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturer's horse Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.
In Brueghel's Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away Quite leisurely from the disaster; the plowman may Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry, But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shone As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green Water; and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky, Had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.
Best to you and your family.

I appreciate your kind words and thoughts. I never really thought about him being part of the greatest generation - but he really was.
I know when we have his memorial next week at Ft Logan, I will really understand what his service really meant.
You are so kind in your thoughts and that gives me comfort.
