Does anybody here use Classmates.com? |
|
I'm just wondering how well it works. On the individual profiles, does it say how long it's been since that person has logged in, for example? And how does the email work? I only want to look up a couple people I didn't mean to lose touch with (you know how that goes), so I don't want to waste my time and money on something that isn't very helpful.

1. You have to pay for the whole service |
|
Since HS was so long ago and the people who dwell on it are those who are best detailed in Springsteen's song "Glory Days" I do not recommend using it. Live in the now and celebrate the times you are in.
That and it seems to think that the Peace Corps are something you do right out of High School...(99% of the time not the case in PC Volunteers.)

9. You can go into the Peace Corps right after hs? |
|
I thought you had to go to college first.

11. They don't take people right after HS...not anymore |
|
They might have taken them just after Kennedy created it. I've been in and I've never even heard of such a volunteer. None-the-less classmates.com thinks that this is what happens. I wrote them a few years ago (5 actually) and told them to correct the mistake. They never have.
The public knowledge of the Peace Corps is mostly based on rumors and myth. The fact that there are so few of us doesn't help.
You don't need a college degree...but a good amount of professional experience or a college degree (BS,BA minimum) help to make you more competitive in the selection process.

2. I paid for it for two years. |
|
Stopped because it was kind of pricy. I do not recall seeing any messages saying when anyone was last logged in. It used to be that someone could e-mail you directly but last time I was using it any message went into your in-box at classmates.com, which is better because that way you don't accidentally delete a message you aren't sure of. I was able to contact some siblings of former classmates but did not have much luck with the classmates themselves. For what I was getting I thought it was too much money. But then I graduated years ago. If you just graduated recently it might be more worth it to you.

4. The free part work pretty good. They have a list of people, and if you |
|
need more information, then you pay. I actually ended up getting a hold of someone I haven't seen since grade school without paying for the service.

5. I put my name on it a few years ago but I didn't pay to use it. |
|
I just wanted to see who else was up there and they made me put mine up in order to do it if I remember correctly. Other than that I never used it, but someone I did want to hear from ended up contacting me.
I'd lean towards not using it. Maybe you could contact whoever puts reunions together for your school. Finding that out might be as easy as a google search.

I'm thinking if I need info from Classmates, the best way would be to find someone who is already a member and just their account.

6. I just have the basic free service. |
|
If there is someone you want to get in touch with, you can e-mail them. I would not pay for anything.

8. I hate paying for things |
|
that should essentially be free. I just recently got used to this bottled water thing, but I still won't buy it.

10. Not long after signing up I was bombarded with spam. |
|
I tried to quit but they made it too difficult and they required more info. So I went to my personal info area and changed my E-Mail addy to a bogus one and haven't been back there since.
