Seriously, what does the "700" in the 700 Club stand for
Not the one here at DU but the one on TV that promotes assassination (along with kidnapping)?

A co-worker wants to know.

2. From Wikipedia
The number "700" comes from the Robertson's first televised telethon for his ministry. In it, he set a goal of 700 members paying $10 each a month, a number which would meet the industry's operating budget at the time. Robertson came to refer to these members as the '700 Club' and the name stuck.

5. Yep.
You're basically signing up to give Pat $700 a year. "Can't you spare $2 a day to help spread the word of Jeebus?"

I guess "The 712 (And In Leap Years 714) Club" didn't do so well in the marketing tests.

12. It was the first 700 members that gave X amount
to keep them on the air when they were going to fold from lack of funds.
I always picture 700 little gray haired ladies scraping up their last twenty or whatever. :(
