The Krakatau, Edvard Munch connection
This just in:

"On 27 August 1883, the volcanic island of Krakatau in Indonesia erupted, vaporizing two-thirds of its land mass, launching tsunamis which killed 36,000 people in Java and Sumatra. The explosion had a force of 30,000 megatons, one million times greater than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, lowering world temperatures for the next year. The bloodred twilight skies it caused over that winter inspired Edvard Munch's painting The Scream."
