Your 6 favorite movies?
This has probably been asked before at the DU.

But, I'm the curious one, so...

Here are mine:

1) "The Lion in Winter". Magnificent film. Best performances from Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn. Brilliant score by John Barry.

2)"Network". Weirdly prescient film about television. Wonderful satire that's still relevant.

3) "The Manchurian Candidate". The ultimate in paranoia political thrillers. Angela Lansbury is evil personified in this film.

4) "Sunset Boulevard". The best of Billy Wilder's films, IMO. Great script. Gloria Swanson is superb.

5) "Some Like It Hot". Billy Wilder's second best film and one of the best comedies ever. The final line is a classic.

6) "The Bandwagon". My favorite musical. Delightful score and some of Fred Astaire's best dancing.

1. I can't believe she hasn't won an Oscar yet
she almost got one for Gaslight

But she got one for being Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast. Well, it was more for her musical voice, but I think she deserved a best actress at least. She has done a lot in her life.

1. The Godfather - simply the most perfect movie ever. Flawless on all levels.
2. Singing In The Rain - Pure joy on film. Best musical.
3. It's A Wonderful Life - Overplayed sure, but still the best feel-good movie regardless of the Christmas setting.
5. Pulp Fiction - Brilliant, funny, violent, orginal.
6. Goodfellas - My favorite Scorsese film.
7. Casablanca - A classic, always fun to watch. Claude Rains rules!

So many more, but these are usually my favorites.

4. The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Philip Kaufman (boring tagline)

18. Only six? You're a stern taskmaster!
Edited on Tue Nov-11-03 01:05 PM by NightTrain
1. DR. STRANGELOVE (1964). Stanley Kubrick's brilliant satire about the accidental outbreak of a nuclear war between the USA and the USSR. Peter Sellers plays three separate roles, while George C. Scott has a field day as a hawkish general.

2. MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON (1939). Call me a hopeless romantic, but I love the idea of a lone man taking on our corrupt system and winning through sheer decency.

3. LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT (1962). The ultimate interpretation of Eugene O'Neill's tragic autobiographical play. Katherine Hepburn, Ralph Richardson, Dean Stockwell and Jason Robards each turned in a powerhouse performance.

4. SCHINDLER'S LIST (1993). After a decade-plus of enjoyable but shallow special-effects vehicles, Spielberg finally got to make the film he wanted to make. And boy, did he deliver! If ever a better testament to the power of redemption has been filmed, I've yet to see it.

More later....

Edited on Tue Nov-11-03 01:06 PM by NightTrain
Sorry, but I had to go make a delivery. Now, before my boss sends me back out on the road....

5. REAR WINDOW (1954). They didn't call Hitchcock the "Master of Suspense" for nothing! No matter how many times I see this film, its excruciating climax always makes me squirm.

6. LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN (1990). Possibly the most underrated film of the last 20 years. German director Uli Edel's adaptation of Hubert Selby's controversial 1964 novel about poverty in Truman-era Brooklyn features Jennifer Jason Leigh in a performance that should've received an Oscar nomination. "Last Exit" is a 105-minute sucker-punch that rubs the viewer's face in much of what most people would rather ignore.

We are discussing movies that we enjoy watching over and over, not necessarily Oscar or Cannes festival caliber. It is unfair to rank them because oftentimes it depends on the mood I happen to be in. Here is my list in no particular order:

Vertigo

North by Northwest

Indiana Jones

Jaws

But I'm known for being a neanderthal when it comes to "films." I don't see many movies. There are probably others I like just as much; these are just the ones that popped into my head first, in no particular order:

Monty Python: life of brian and holy grail; I can't choose between them, so I'll count them as one.

Fried Green Tomatoes

The Grass Harp

Seabiscuit

The Princess Bride

Dolores Claiborne

also rans: Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns. Butch Cassidy and the sundance kid. Billy Jack.

28. Fav Movies - Johnny Depp edition
Edited on Tue Nov-11-03 02:27 PM by supernova
Ok, so I have a bias

I love them all and rotate them frequently. There are some of his supporting roles I really enjoy as well (Chocolat, The Man Who Cried), but I've only chosen among lead parts that are out on DVD or VHS currently.. and this is just so far! So much to Look forward to!

1 - Edward Scissorhands

2 - What's Eating Gilbert Grape?

3 - Dead Man

4 - Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas*

5 - Donnie Brasco*

6 - Benny & Joon

7 - Don Juan De Marco

8 - From Hell

9 - Ed Wood*

10 - Sleepy Hollow

edit: * = Movies for which Johnny should have gotten an oscar nomination. Not that he cares, but still. The academy is shameful in their blindness to Johnny's genius. :spank:

OK, so I didn't stick to 6, so sue me. :P :D

48. Oh, this is difficult.
I've based this list on what I like seeing over and over again, but the actual contents may change from time to time. My apologies.

In no particular order...

*Casablanca. Claude Rains does indeed rule, though Peter Lorre and S.Z. Sakall are hardly chopped liver.

*Enchanted April (the 1990s version, of course; the earlier version was appalling)

*Sense and Sensibility. Ang Lee, Emma Thompson and a fabulous ensemble cast created pure magic.

*The Philadelphia Story. "Wouldn't we be more comfortable on pogo sticks?"

*A Room with a View. Another rare case where cast, director and screenwriter came together to create magic.

*Henry V (the 1989 version)

If I were to give you the complete list of movies I could watch over and over again with great pleasure, we'd be here all day...

Here is a tentative list, subject to change.

Midnight Cowboy is my official favorite movie, even though it's dated, for personal reasons.

Mulholland Drive

Twelve Monkeys

Brazil

Blue Velvet

Looking for Mr. Goodbar -- again, personal reasons

There are many fine movies I've seen and also many movies I have not seen so the list is subject to change.

On edit: I forgot to say the list is not in any special order.
