How is IMDB.com protecting it's photos?
I can't view any of them after saving to my hard drive.

1. They are likely putting a clear layer over the photo.
and you are saving the clear layer.

2. You can use Snapz Pro X
from Ambrosia software to capture such images (though it may only be available for Macs).

3. got a link to a specific example?
I would look but I'm busy getting high.. Really high.. <--> this high. OK, not really.. I don't smoke weed. But without a link I would guess flash or javascript for image obfuscation.

4. My husband says that it's a 1 pixel transparent .gif
and that the image you see is actually a background image.

You can't save it.

5. Fucking communists.
I can understand the "linking and zapping bandwidth" part of it, but how many of these sites actually OWN the content they post. We're talking celebrity pictures in this case, and I believe on IMDB, they're all movie screencaps. IMDB doesn't have any ownership of that content, so they shouldn't be dicks about it.

Fucking corporatist assholes..... don't get me started.

11. If I remeber correctly...
The MPAA is very strict about screen captures. For example, a DVD playing in OS seX only captures a black screen when doing a screen grab while a DVD is playing.. (the dvd is only blocked) For some odd fucking reason they really care about this stupid shit.

12. While I agree with your sentiments. I can't let this stand
without comment here.

First off, IMDB was a cooperative effort of thousands of internet users and dates back before graphical web interfaes were in common use, ie gopher and lynx

Secondly, imagine the bandwidth it takes just to run it as it is, much less let every script kiddie on the planet put a picture of Steve Reeves on their homepage on IMDB's dime.

Third, I am sure this is some kind of agreement with the owners... and yes there are owners of even movie grabs... to at least require an IQ of warm piss to get the pictures.

9. And if you are using Firefox
You can go into the Tools menu, click on Page info then click on the media tab, there are several listings, go through them until you find the proper image.

13. Wow...
I never knew that tool was there. Thanks for making me less ignorant. One more reason to keep the 'fox and not go back to IE.

To be honest, I don't really blame IMDB for doing this. I've seen many people harvest pictures from others for their own commercial web pages, or link to them to save bandwidth. At least some of the pictures aren't screen captures, but professional ones from galleries, which they (presumably) have permission to use, but have to make an effort to not allow commercial redistribution. The technique they use makes it a little more difficult to save something for personal use, but will thwart whole-scale reaping of picture archives by 'bots.

10. Yes, that will work, or like I said. if you are not
afraid to get your hands dirty with html, then try this...

for this page... ?path=pgallery&path_key=Taylor,%20Rod%20(I)

you will find this section of code

<div id="content">
<br><h1>MPTV.net Photo</h1>
<table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="100%">
<tr>
<td valign="top">

<table border="0" width="100%">
<tr>
<td width="20%" align="left"><a title="Previous Photo" href="/gallery/mptv/1033/1812_0035.jpg?path=pgallery&path_key=Taylor, Rod (I)&seq=2"><img src="" height="25" width="68" border="0" alt="prev" align="left"></td>
<td width="60%" align="center"><b><span class="phototitle">Images of Rod Taylor</span></b></td>
<td width="20%" align="right"><a title="Next Photo" href="/gallery/mptv/1362/1649_0001.jpg?path=pgallery&path_key=Taylor, Rod (I)&seq=2"><img src="" height="25" width="68" border="0" alt="next" align="right"></td>
</tr>
<tr><td align="center" colspan="3"><table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" background="" class="photosrc"><td><img src="" border="0" width="420" height="286"></td></tr></table></td></tr>

<tr><td align="center" colspan="3">
<span class="photocaption">"The Time Machine" Rod Taylor 1960 MGM</span><br>

///////////this one ////////////////

is the one you want

Appears to me they do this to protect their bandwidth from kiddies. Can't say I blame them.
