NEW YORK (Reuters) - Veteran punk rockers Green Day dominated at the annual MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, scoring seven wins including the evening's top honor of Video of the Year for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams."

The group, whose members noted in accepting the big prize that they have been together for 16 years, opened the show with a performance of the song that won them six of their seven awards. They were also honored with the viewer's choice award for "American Idiot."

Green Day also injected one of the evening's few political notes, saying "here's to our soldiers, let's bring them home safe" as they accepted their final award.

1. Hey, I'm going to see them Tuesday nite.
I'm very excited that they won. I really liked them at the Live 8 concert.

3. You're going to the Meriweather Post Pavillion - so am I
we only got lawn seats. I finally decided to get tickets after how great they were at Live 8 and I realized how much I really loved their music. The Wach in Philly was sold out.

Cool - more DUers at the concert

4. Think about what that means, that they won the viewer's choice award
That's a sign that youth (who are the predominant voting demographic for such awards), voted in the majority for an anti-Bush cabal song.

Just something worth thinking about.
