UK pupils allowed 'F' word five times a lesson
Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 10:10 AM by emad
Pupils are being allowed to swear at one Northamptonshire secondary school - as long as they limit their use of bad language to five times a lesson.

A tally of how many times the f-word is used will be kept on the board.

Parents of children at the Weavers School in Wellingborough were told of the new policy in a letter, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

The policy, which comes into effect when term starts next week, has been condemned by parents' groups and MPs.

2. good for them
I think Americans' obsession with poo poo words is probably the single silliest thing we do. It actually gives those words power.

"obscenity" and "sex" and "profanity" are all just stupid subjective ideas anyway. "that sucks" is acceptable enough to use by news anchors and saturday morning cartoons and refers to sucking dick, and that is more acceptable than use of the word "hell" in a cartoon. Give me a fucking break.

If you don't want your kid to cuss then show him or her there are more effective ways of speaking.

6. I'll second this.
It's all about implication, context, and effect.

Saying "fuck no!" to a friend of mine has much less impact than saying it to, say, my father (egads!).

Profanity, used sparingly and surprisingly, has much more impact than using it all the time. It has power because we choose to let it have power and give it the meanings that it has. Words become profane, or stop being profane, as language evolves. No words are 'inherantly' profane.

I agree, sui. We're way, way too uptight!

3. ...Because SIX times would be obscene.
Good grief. Guess the kids will be learning to count to five, and not much else.

This does remind me of a South Park episode.

4. Counting to 5 would probably get them grade A at maths G.C.S.E.
Not that I'm taking a position in the unending squabbles about grade-inflation.

7. Quite - plus compounds
An occasionally used phrase over here when presented with something which one does not like is "what the buggery bollocks is that?" Does that count as 1 or 2?

10. In that case
:woohoo:

We can all be as obscene as we like as long as we don't say the F-word (more than 5 times).
