Had A FUN Golf Tourney but am PISSED
:grr:

well not really but the 18th is a wide open par 5 and they do the longest-drive contest on it.

been hitting the ball a TON all day (and 'mostly' straight). Unleash one off the tee and come up short of the longest drive of the day. EXACTLY 2 FEET short. Right down the pipe too. Sign was in the middle of the fairway.

2 measley FEET! actually had to MOVE the sign to hit my second. shot.

Yardage on the sign?

318 yards yeah, i killed it.

TWO FEET! :grr:

would have won a new set of Taylor Made woods. damn!

5. Can I call you Happy Gilmore now?
It's a great drive, nonetheless. Blame it on a bad bounce...bad spin...the sun was in your eyes...you were too drunk...you felt bad for the winner and took a dive...

You were terribly unlucky and/or kind. You should go buy a new set of woods anyway.

Yup, I said "wood"

10. You should have seen the skinny bastard..
that won! Just kidding---that was a hell of a drive. A few years back I told my wife I wanted a "Big Bertha" for Christmas. She asked me why, and I told her I could drive it further with a Big Bertha. She asked, "why do you want to hike further into the woods?" That ended that conversation. ;(

Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 07:00 PM by matcom
one when i was in college with a dinger at 322 and one 4 years ago with a 327 yarder.

can't quite pull that off these days but occasionly CAN get close. never got to measure the ones that were 70 yards to the RIGHT of the fairway though :eyes:

14. So someone hit a driver shot 2 feet further than yours?
I'm impressed at the 318 yard!!

OK -- here's a translation (I think).

On a golf course there are specific places where you put that white (or colored) golf ball on a tee and whack the hell out of the ball -- hoping that it lands on the wide open space (this is called the fairway). You don't want your ball to go into the woods (left and right side of the grassy fairways) or into the bunkers (these are the sand filled traps). You want to "drive" your ball toward the target down the center of the fairways -- or the wide open green spaces on a golf course.

The object of the game is to whack the ball as far as possible and as close as possible to the "green". Your "target" is the hole on the green.

Landing Area: Golf course architects design places where golf balls should land along fairways and on greens. Each of these is a landing area. .

Our hero, Matcom, whacked his golf ball with a club called a driver and he got to within 2 feet of the sign which marked the longest drive which said 318 yards.

Had his drive (ball hit with a club called a driver) passed that sign -- he would have won a new set of golf clubs -- actually the "wood" clubs are now metal. "Taylor Made" clubs are one of the premium name golf club makers.

The book "Golf: A to Z" by Chris Burkhart is a neat little book which translates Golf lingo.

I'm returning to love of golf after having being diverted by other interests. I originally learned the Single Axis Swing -- and then people who learned the other swing method convinced me that I was doing something wrong. My swing went to hell and I quit. Now that the Single Axis Swing is being revived (several tour pros are using the Single Axis Swing) -- I've figured out my problems and I'm getting back in "the swing". The sound of hitting a ball hard correctly is one of the best sounds in the whole world -- it is a solid thunk that is sort of musical.

Congratulations Matcom -- didn't they have a runner's up prize?

15. and if a frog had wings his butt wouldn't drag the ground when he jumped
My favorite golf course comment.

318 yards is a very respectable distance. Did the fairway have a lot of grass or was a lot of roll involved?

If you had hit a Maxfi Noodle you might have gotten that extra two feet. It says on the box, ten free yards.

Taylor Made woods, almost cool.

The new Taylor Made CBJ(?)irons are magic clubs.

16. Did you at least win a door prize?
At my tournament on Saturday, there was some nice stuff. Did I win anything? Nope. x(

Oh well, I still use my Wilson stand bag from another tournament. :7 I always play with the same 3 guys and we suck, so we never win, but usually one of us walks off with a door prize. At least the BBQ was good. :9

22. My favorite tournament story.
My agency held a charity tournament every year during the United Way drive. One of our mailroom guys is the father in law to boxer "Jesse" James Leija, who I think was a world champ at the time. Anyway, they somehow lined up 4 color TVs as the first prize. Well, these guys show up with matching Lexus shirts and matching Taylor Made drivers (when the gold ones first came out). They were all A players and proceeded to kick everyone's ass. But there were no rules about team make-up really. My team sucked so hard we didn't even turn in our scorecard. Well, the team of A players donated their TVs to the team that came in last place, which WOULD HAVE BEEN US, if we'd turned in our damn card. x(

23. Nice Drive!
You must be built pretty powerfully. I'm 5'10". 200 lb and can sometimes hit it about 280.

If I hit a drive 318 down the middle, I would be ecstatic.

29. 318?
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 10:54 AM by ProfessorGAC
That's about 40 yards farther than i can hit it! I'm a 260 to 270 guy, who can hit it out to the high 270's if i pure it. Of course, i can do it often enough and straight enough to play to a 3. So, distance isn't everything, but it sure is fun.

That's a bomb!
